Nineplus & Ginsters proudly present the B.L.U. Chapel Idne Classic
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 September, 2005 : - - Held over the weekend of the 17th & 18th September at Sennen Cove in West Cornwall, the third in the series of competitions being presented by Nineplus and Ginsters throughout 2005.
The contest started at 8.30am on Saturday in perfect 2ft peelers, with every long boarder worth his salt showcasing their talent throughout the early rounds. The September sunshine was shining and with a light offshore breeze conditions were contestable for all the divisions – Open, Ladies, Masters and Juniors. The first round saw some extremely good surfing with nose-riding being the obvious manoeuvre to win the judges over and advance through to the next heats. Elliot Dudley from Wales surfed really well in the opening round, as did most of the younger competitors who are slowly becoming more of a fixture throughout the result tables. As the contest progressed unfortunately the surf didn’t, and with a high tide line and steep sand shelf the bay at Sennen became a wave-less pool by 3.00 and the contest was put on hold. Most of competitors took to fishing or lazing about for the remainder of Saturday afternoon until the Party kicked off at ‘The Beach’ restaurant on Sennen Beach, with a huge silver platter of fresh salmon and meat selection, followed by a movie of the previous contests held so far this year.
An early rise on Sunday was greeted by near flat conditions, but without time to spare the event got underway for the Junior and Ladies divisions, who still managed to surf the small knee high waves. As the tide dropped the contest was moved over, complete with 200 Ginsters sandwiches, to the halfway point of Gwenver and Sennen where with the incoming tide the surf was increased and the Mens Quarter Finals was held in near perfect 2-3ft waves. Unlucky losers were Ben Skinner, who surfed well in the quarters but simply could not find the needed waves in the Semis, and Dan Harris who is leading the ratings and was unlucky not to advance.
The Finals - The Juniors was held in classic 2ft conditions with Joe Davies from Jersey taking first place, and second going to ‘Sennen local boy’ James Parry. Next up was the Ladies final and again Dominique Munroe won her division easily with some great waves and good footwork. For the Masters it was Plymouth University Surf Lecturer Malcolm Findlay beating South African Mike Bunn, and in the Open it was Joe Davies from Jersey taking his second trophy of the weekend home by winning the Open ahead of Elliot Dudley from Wales. Third place went to 15 year old Ben Howarth from Nr. Devon and 4th to Lee Ryan of Newquay.
With only one contest left in order to decide the overall B.L.U. champions for 2005, all eyes will be on the Surfed Out Classic at Saunton Sands, Devon, to be held on 15th/16th October. We hope to see you there…
