Rider impresses sponsor at the Headworx BPSA Welsh Open
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2005 : - - Young gun Matt Capel showed his sponsors his worth at the Headworx BPSA Welsh Open by taking second place in the Headworx Pro Junior event.
Capel, 19 was just one good wave away from winning his second consecutive BPSA Pro Junior event but was beaten in the dying minutes by a couple of outstanding waves from current tour leader Oli Adams.
The Headworx rider performed well in his heats and impressed the judges early on, being the first to lead the chase for the £250 Freerange Best Cutback prize, which was eventually won by Toby Atkins.
Capel looked confident and aggressive in the water under difficult conditions and in the final he put a couple of good early scores on the board, but it just wasn’t enough to beat rival Adams.
“The conditions were really tough this weekend, especially in the final but I managed to catch a couple of good waves and was really pleased with my performance. I’m stoked with second place because Oli was just going mad out there and caught two sick waves so there was no competing with that.” explained Matt.
The top of the leader board couldn’t be closer. With just three events left and only 140 points separating the current leader Adams and last year’s BPSA Junior champion Capel, the title is still wide open.
Fellow Headworx rider Reubin Pearce made it through to the semis in the Open event but finished third in a tough heat behind Johnny Fryer and the final runner-up Sam Lamiroy. Pearce did just enough to keep himself in top spot on the tour, but with the event win going to his nearest rival Mark ‘Egor’ Harris it looks like the title race will go down to the wire.
Headworx, which has been relaunched under new owners this year, decided that it was the right time to make a return to grass-roots surfing events. Last weekend’s Headworx BPSA Welsh Open proved a huge success for the brand.
“Everyone at Headworx was thrilled with the event. The location was beautiful and everything ran smoothly with a fantastic turn-out. Although conditions were heavy on Sunday, for officials and competitors, the surfing was spectacular. The event produced some excellent performances and we are proud to be back at the heart of British surfing.” explained Headworx’ Marketing Manager Ben Byfield.
