1. ISA NEWS SYMBOLIC AND COLORFUL "PARADE OF NATIONS" AND "SANDS OF THE WORLD" CEREMONIES WILL KICK OFF THE 2005 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS ON OCTOBER 8, 2005
U.S.A to Host the International Event Convening 26 Nations in Huntington Beach, California
Huntington Beach, California, September 22, 2005 - On October 8, 2005, at 2 p.m., the world's most prestigious junior surfing contest, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, will officially kick off with the colorful "Parade of Nations" followed by the traditional "Sands of the World" ceremony. Teams from 26 countries including: Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Tahiti, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela will participate in the parade and sand ceremony. Both ceremonies will be a visual and emotional beginning to the week-long contest.
In the "Parade of Nations," similar to an Olympic opening ceremony, teams will march in alphabetical order by country down the Huntington Beach pier and through the contest area proudly touting their nation's flag and wearing their national colors. Once assembled, the "Sands of the World" ceremony will commence. In this ceremony, an International Surfing Association (ISA) tradition created by ISA President Fernando Aguerre for the World Surfing Games in 1996, each team will pour sand brought from their respective country into a specially crafted box in a display of unity and fraternal spirit. The significance of the ceremony is paramount to the ISA's hopes for a peaceful world and is symbolic of the spirit of community throughout the sport of surfing worldwide. The ceremony will also feature welcoming speeches by a host of dignitaries.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the world's most important sport body, recognizes the ISA as the world governing authority for surfing and waveriding sports. Inspired by the Olympic spirit, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships showcases athletes competing on behalf of their country. The top four finalists will be awarded gold, silver, bronze and copper medals. Like in the Olympics, cultural identity, team spirit and moments of great personal triumph are hallmarks of the event. 4. OLYMPIC NEWS 2005 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM TO BE AWARDED IOC PRESIDENT'S TROPHY
August 22, 2005 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President's Trophy arrived at the International Surfing Association's headquarters last week and will be awarded to the top ranking national team at the end of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships 2005.
ISA President Fernando Aguerre will present the illustrious trophy at the Awards Ceremony scheduled for October 16, 2005. Individual members of the victorious team will also receive an ISA gold medal.
Last year in Tahiti, Australia came out on top, taking home the trophy and the World Junior Championship Team title.
Nine years ago, in 1996, the ISA awarded the first IOC President's Trophy for surfing to the USA Team at the World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach. This commemorated the first time that surfers competed in an event under the Olympic Movement.
The ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, hosted by Surfing America and sponsored by Quiksilver this year, is set to take place in Huntington Beach October 8 - 16, 2005. It will showcase talented young athletes from countries around the world battling it out to take home individual and team titles.
The IOC gives the President's Trophy only to officially recognized International Federations. The International Surfing Association has been recognized by the IOC as the international governing body for surfing and all wave riding sports since 1995.

5. ISA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS ISA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
We are very pleased with the recent increase in interest in this area of ISA business. It appears after many years of discussions and a slow take-up of the programs that many surfing nations are now in the position to take a serious look at this area of promoting participation in the sport. This is all part of the global expansion of surfing and it is certainly an area that needs the involvement of the various member national associations to build this base to the participation pyramid.
The system consists of a number of layers and project areas. Our approach at the ISA is to endorse what we consider to be the “best practice” programs and these are developed by Surfing Australia. Whilst this is good for Surfing Australia, it is also a major benefit to those taking part in the program as it fast tracks many years of coaching and surfschool experience and therefore brings the new Licensees current information and operational experience. Royalties within the program are very fair and moderate and contribute to new coaching resource development.
Affiliation under the Surfschools Worldwide system can be at either of two levels: a. As a General Licensee [GL] who has the responsibility to conduct accreditation courses for coaches and also sub-license Surfschools in a “territory”. Currently Brazil, Venezuela, Italy, Ireland, Barbados, Japan, Costa Rica, Fiji and New Zealand have such licenses. All material required to present the various courses is provided under the Licence and Surfing Australia works with the GL to make sure the courses are presented properly. B. Where no GL exists in a country, a surfschool can directly affiliate. This happens at the moment in Peru.
Surfing Australia has just redesigned its coaching accreditation system [it has an update every 4 years] and built other programs, so the amount of educational programming is growing.
We currently have three points of support for countries using our system. Surfing Australia [Alan Atkins], Marcos Conde [CBS – Brazil] for Latin America and the Caribbean and Peter Cook for Europe.
The coaching and surfschool activities in a country provide jobs, responsible activity which is regarded well by Government, athlete preparation making success from competition more likely, talent identification of future stars, an income stream from tourism and a profile for the sport.
Surfing Australia and the ISA will be conducting a briefing on the night of October 13 at the Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Championships, Huntington Beach, for all those interested in being part of our system. Duration expected to be about 30 minutes. Following this will be a “get together” of all Surfing Australia Surfschools Worldwide Licensees and also ISA Judging Development Program Licensees. Full details will be included in event schedule details or contact Alan Atkins or Layla Marcille of the ISA on site at the event or functions.

6. WOMEN IN SURFING SOFIA MULANOVICH: THE BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD
The Peruvian Sofía Mulanovich, current World Champion and leader of the 2005 season of the WCT, received new recognition this year, winning the award as the Best Female Surfer, granted by the most prestigious surf magazine, "Surfer Magazine".
After obtaining only a few months ago the ESPY trophy as the best feminine athlete of action sports, Sofía Mulanovich reaches new recognition, what clearly demonstrates her fan’s support towards the small but great athlete.
The award ceremony was located in The Grove, in Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim, California. In addition to the trophy and the gratitude of the public, our champion and the other winner, Kelly Slater, were awarded with a Suzuki Grand Vitara, granted by the sponsor of the event.
Thanks to votes from thousands of fans from around the world and of course from Peru, Sofía was able to achieve this new award.
The 2005 Surfer Poll and Video Awards has been celebrated for four decades and has the highest honor between the awards ceremonies of this kind in the both categories, masculine and feminine.
The second position was left to the Hawaiian Keala Kenelly, followed by Rochelle Ballard, also from Hawaii. In the fourth position was the American Lisa Andersen and Layne Beachley took the fifth position.
“It’s a great honor to be nominated for the ESPY and the Surfer Poll and Video Awards 2005 and is still more incredible to have won both of them. I am really thankful to the fans, the ones who vote for these prizes, and even more thankful to the people from Peru, because without their support and good vibes, nothing would have happened ", declared Sofía.
The Peruvian surfer is now in the United States, preparing herself for the following date of the World 2005 Tour of the WCT, to take place in Malibu, California, from the 1st to the 9th of October. Mulanovich leads the current season with 5268 points, followed very closely by Chelsea Georgeson, with 5040 points.

7. ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
SURFRIDER FOUNDATION’S CELEBRITY SURF JAM ROCKS HUNTINGTON BEACH Musicians, Pros and Everyday Joe’s Come Together to Surf in Support of Beach and Coastal Environments (September 13, 2005) In what might have been the year’s most exciting surf event, the first annual Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Surf Jam, saw a first-time-ever mix of top professional surfers, musicians and average every-day surfers battle it out in the surf next to the famed Huntington Beach Pier this past weekend. Utilizing the National Surf League’s unique “Game” format, competitors were separated into two teams consisting of four pros, four celebrity musicians and four Surfrider Foundation activists each. The Silver Team included such notable names as last year’s Quiksilver California Cup MVP Pat O’Connell, Ventura wunderkind Dane Reynolds, RVCA pro Pascal Standsfield and crowd favorite and Volcom pro Alex Gray. Joining them were Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg, Incubus bassist Ben Kenney and singer Brandon Boyd. The team was rounded out by Surfrider activists Andy Dellenbach, Ari Lawrence, JP Holeman, Joel Banslaben and Brian Lind. Leading the Team was Big Wave legend, coach Mike Parsons. Surfing against them was Blue Team captain Rob Machado, who was joined by Huntington Beach up-and-comer Brett Simpson and current World Championship Tour stars Tim Curran and Timmy Reyes. Also surfing on the Blue Team were Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and Sugar Ray Bassist Murphy Kargas, Good Charlotte’s Dean Butterworth and longtime surfer and Porno For Pyros guitarist Peter Distefano. Surfrider activists Christian Spinillo, Theron Stanley, John Wright and Leslie Poland rounded out the team, along with champion NSL coach Garth Tarlow. While event organizers had been concerned about the less-then-stellar conditions throughout the week leading up to the event, Sunday dawned with solid 2-4 foot surf and glassy conditions. With the Silver Team taking the water first, team captain Pat O’Connell wasted no time catching what might have been the day’s longest wave – a beautiful left that Pat eventually rode through the treacherous barnacle encrusted pilings and onto beach on the opposite side of the pier. Blue Team pro Tim Curran quickly answered back during the next quarter with an amazing 360º aerial grab that had the crowd on its feet cheering. Even the celebrities got into the groove, as evidenced by Incubus’ Brandon Boyd, who ended up receiving the day’s highest score for absolutely ripping a beautiful right handed peeler, prompting fellow team mate Alex Gray to quip “How’d he get so lucky to get to be a rock star AND a hot surfer?” So it went throughout the day, with waves being traded off between the two teams; at times inspired and at times comical. Despite a late fourth quarter charge, at the end of the day the Silver Team ended up holding off the Blue Team to win by a single point. “This event was awesome!” said Incubus’ Brandon Boyd. “What a great opportunity to come down here and surf some great waves in support of the Surfrider Foundation.” With trophies being issued to both teams, the big winner of the day was the Surfrider Foundation, who staged the event to help raise awareness and support for beach and coastal environments. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the support we received from our celebrities and pro athletes,” said X-Games commentator Sal Masekela, who along with professional surfer Pat O’Connell, co-chaired the Celebrity Surf Jam event. “Having musicians like Brandon Boyd, Jim Lindberg or Peter DiStefano, along with guys like Tim Curran, Timmy Reyes and Rob Machado all getting the cause, really helps the Surfrider Foundation with the tremendous work they do to protect our oceans, waves and beaches.” The Surfrider Foundation would like the thank the following companies in helping to make this year’s Celebrity Surf Jam event possible: Red Bull Energy Drink, Adidas, FedEx, Wahoo’s, Diedrich Coffee, The National Surf League, Surfline, Foam Magazine, Water Magazine, Squeeze OC, DVS, Corona, Twin Fin Wines and the Hilton Waterfront Hotel. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 40,000 members and 60 chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico, with international affiliates in Australia, Europe, Japan and Brazil.

CABO CORRIENTES:
This place is one of Macizo de Tandilla and definitely one of the natural beauties of Argentina. Also, it was identified as one of the best breaks in America for the South Cone Expedition, an event organized by Surfer Magazine, where surfers of the level of Martin Potter participated, who have already competed in a Championship organized by the Argentinean Surf Association.
In this location people have surfed, Marine Biology students have realized projects recognizing the place’s unique eco system, fishing has been a common practice and the environment beauty is always incredible.
Authoritarian bureaucrats of the era made the strategic decision of construct a wharf, interrupting the development of the place with cement and unfortunately what had always been an amazing place became a trap of sand and dirt.
We have an obligation with our future generations (as everything belongs to them) to generate the pertinent actions to preserve beaches and cliffs, the natural drift of the sand, the cleaning of the sea, the coastal defense against the Aeolian erosion and everything else that impedes or degrades the environment, what affects the beaches and the waves. On us depends that we live on memories and protect the sea, the beaches and the waves of Argentina: Become a member of Surfrider Argentina and contribute, before it is late: info@surfrider.org.ar
MESSAGE FROM SURFRIDER ARGENTINA HONORARY PRESIDENT:
The following is a message that Fernando Aguerre, Honorary President of Surfrider Argentina and the ISA President, sent from the United States to a group of Argentinean surfers about to produce the first public appearance of Surfrider Argentina. The below words, originally in Spanish, were read at the beach in Mar del Plata, Argentina in Oct 8, 2005.
“My dear surfers friends from Argentina… Although I am not able to be with all of you in person, today my surf spirit is PRESENT. It is present next to the group of pioneers and visionaries of Argentine surf, who are being supervised by one of ours greatest surf legends, the ex- Argentine Champion, Pedro Balanesi, and who are giving their persistence, love and time in protection and defense of our beaches, ocean and waves”.
“Today it is a very special DAY. This is the first official activity of Surfrider Argentina, the Guardians of the Sea, as an organization recognized by Surfrider U.S.A. Paddling is like surfing and catching a wave. Paddling is the preparation, the introduction to surf itself.
This rowing of today is our introduction to the great one of our lives: The rowing of the cleaning and the defense of beaches, seas and waves of our country. This protection is a task that honors us. This is the defense of the places that have given us some of the best moments of our lives, where we built strong friendships and long lasting love.
It is the protection of the most important natural resource of Mar del Plata. Sure it is the most important natural resource and so many times forgotten (certainly during the months outside the season). Without our beaches, sea and waves, Mar del Plata would be everything else but this amazing city.
A defense that is not limit to stopping people who are throwing sweepings in the sea or beaches, not limit to educate yourselves and to educate others so they do not throw cigarette butts, animal excrement, preservatives of all kinds.
This protection also includes the rational and reasonable use of water, of what it is thrown in the streets…. If only the oil that comes from the cars finish in the beaches where our children play, and on the waves where we surf…. The defense of the sea, its waves and the beaches, is something that has to catch up to all our daily behavior, from the moment when we wake up, until the moment when we turn off the light before sleeping... From the open tap in the morning, with no need, to the cigarette boxes plastics when we open them, and very certainly the wrappers of wax right before passing it on our boards.
Long time ago someone said to me: “Either I am part of the problem or part of the solution.” Our roll, for what today we are active witnesses, is not only to be part of the solution, but much than that, to be ambassadors and diffusers of the solution.
And like with all the problems that the humanity has, the solution happens to accomplish our need to think about global solutions, and at the same time to make us focus in our local battles, in our beaches, our districts, our city.
Certainly today, all the surfers must feel like Guardians of the Sea, and much more widely than that, we must feel and act like Guardians of a Better World.
A world that we dreamed, and a world that in spite of some dark clouds, continues being possible, because it depends on what each one of us do each DAY for the rest of our lives."
Long life to the “Guardians of the Sea” Long life to surf and all the surfers! A big hug,
Fernando Aguerre Honorary President, Surfrider Argentina

BARBADOS 12 TO REPRESENT BARBADOS AT WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS
(September 20 2005) A 12-member Barbados junior team has been hard at work in preparation for the Quiksilver International Surfing Association's (ISA) World Junior Surfing Championships to be held in Huntington Beach California from October 8-16.
The team, which will be competing in the Under-18 boys and girls’ category, as well as the Under-16 boys category, includes Stefan Corbin, Bruce Mackie, Lewis St. John, Eneko Nicholls, Jonathan Reece, Nial Thomas, Christian Mark and Dane Tuach; the girls are Shannon Kieffer, Alix Fitzwilliams, Brittany Golding and Mallory Peterkin.
The head coach of the team is Peter Corbin, while the assistant coach is Christopher Clarke and the manager is Paul Bourne. The other members of the management team include Margo Tuach, the secretary of the BSA and Michelle Mackie, the treasurer of the BSA. According to the president of the Barbados Surfing Association (BSA) Paul Bourne, the team is slated to leave for the championships on October 5.
“The team has been training from the summer and when we wrap up in another two weeks, it will be 12 weeks they have been preparing for the Championships,” said Bourne. There are four surfers making their debut in the boys category, St. John, Nicholls, Mark and Reece, while Fitzwilliams is the only girl making her debut at the championships.
The training sessions were not just restricted to the water, but also included the gym for strength work and yoga sessions. Bourne who has high hopes for the team said that surfing is mental too and we have been teaching the kids strategy, techniques and wave selection. It is not just about getting on a wave.
The water sessions are held at 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays at High Rock, close to the Soup Bowl. He is pleased with the improvement seen in all of the team members and said he believes they are all thinking better. Where the mind leads, the body will follow and it is not always how well you surf, but how you apply yourself as well. One of our main focuses was the use of the mind.
Bourne said that about 25 countries are expected to participate in the event and the standard is really high. Last year, the championships were held in Tahiti and Australia swept all the divisions, including the team title.
Bourne said all of the Barbados team members that attended the games came last in their heat; but this year, the preparation has been better this time around and he is hoping that they will make it out of the first round of eliminations.

Over the past four months both the BCSA and SANS have proven that we could speak as one voice for Canadian surfing. Thanks to all of you for your support and consideration.
Finally, have fun everyone. Do Canada proud.
Yours truly, Canadian Surfing Association John M. Fluke
IRELAND SUPERB SURFING AT STRANDHILL
(September 28, 200) The re-run of this year’s Saltrock Co. Sligo Open took place last weekend at the famous Strandhill beach. The contest began early on Saturday morning with ideal 3-4 ft offshore surf. The juniors were first to hit the water. Standouts included Fergal Smith, local surfer Stephen Kilfeather, Colin Murphy and Hugh Galloway all progressed through the early rounds and into the final. However it was the powerful and stylish surfing of Fergal Smith (Westport) that got the attention from the judges and awarded him 1st place in the juniors. Close behind was Stephen Kilfeather in 2nd followed by Hugh Galloway and Colin Murphy 3rd and 4th positions.
The Bodyboard proved to be a close encounter between current Irish champion Shane Meehan and Bryan Mc Auley. However Bryan's powerful surfing and critical maneuvers placed him ahead of local bodyboarder Sane Meehan followed by Jack Johns and Paul Mc Carther 3rd and 4th positions.
The longboard final was next in the water. Stevie Burns was surfing beyond his years and dominated the final with his powerful surfing. The stylish surfing of Ian Jermyn caught the attention of the judges and was awarded 2nd place. Behind Ian was Eoin Deering 3rd and local surfer Ivan O' Reilly finishing 4th.
Next was the Women's final. Although the conditions slightly deteriorated the level of surfing was still high. Current women’s Irish champion Easky Britton surfed a flawless final and was placed first. Close behind her was Bundorn surfer Shauna Ward in 2nd and local surfer Chloda Finnigan finishing 3rd and Amy Garvey in 4th. The highly anticipated Open Final was contested late on Saturday evening. Spectators were treated to an excellent display of surfing in a closely fought final. However local surfer David O' Donnell, following a break from competitive surfing made his comeback and won this years Saltrock Co. Sligo Open. David displayed powerful surfing throughout the final to edge Fergal Smith into 2nd place followed by the progressive surfing by Scott Reid and Eoin Deering in 3rd and 4th positions.

MIKE MORGAN FINISHES IN TOP EIGHT AT THURSON BPSA (September 8, 2005) Mike Morgan had another great result at last weekends Thurso BPSA finishing in the top eight. Mike won all his heats to progress to the semi finals put unfortunately the event had to be cancelled at that stage due to poor conditions. The event had already been moved to Brimms Ness as the surf was too small in Thurso. The prize money and points were divided between the eight surfers still left in the event, a disappointing finale for Mike who looked good for a place in the final however Mike is now sitting in 8th position in the overall rankings. Cain Kilcullen also compete but was eliminated in the second round, he is sitting in 16th overall.
TEAMS ANNOUNCED FOR WORLDS AND JUNIOR CHAMIONSHIPS (September 2, 2005) The Irish Surf Teams to compete at the European Surfing Championships and the Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships have just been announced by the Irish Surfing Association. And what a diverse team it is with surfers coming from the four corners of Ireland. The Irish Surfing Association would like to congratulate all who made it onto the teams. It is, however, a particularly disappointing time for those who did not make it and we would like to thank all of those who worked and trained so hard all year. There will many more opportunities for you into the future. Don't give up and keep surfing. Two of Ireland's top junior surfers, Shauna Ward, Bundoran and Fergal Smith, Westport, will travel to Huntington Beach, California to compete at the World Junior Surfing Championships taking place from the 7th to 16th October. The standard at this event is incredibly high with many of the competitors on the verge of professional surfing careers.
The issue of sending a team to this event was discussed at the Review meeting last December and at that stage it was agreed that only a few surfers would attend. Although the ISA has always strived to get as many surfers away as possible it is just not possible to send a full team on this occasion for numerous reasons including the fact that the event is annual, the standard at the event has become so incredibly high, the accommodation levy has been removed, the logistics of managing a team at Huntington beach and because of the proximity of these two events (just a few days between them) and the enormous costs involved. The ISA has down through the years shown its commitment to sending as many people away to events as it possibly can. We have been all over the world and will continue to do travel to these events well into the future. The teams A team of eighteen surfers will take off for Costa de Caperica, Portugal on the 20th October to compete at the ten day European Surfing Championships. Three young surfers in particular, Cain Kilcullen, Mike Morgan and Nicole Morgan, who have been competing successfully on the BPSA tour are expected to place well at the event. The Irish Team will be aiming to finish in the top five following a disappointing 9th place at the last European Surfing Championships held in Gran Caneria two years ago. JAMAICA SDF GRANTS JSA $500,000.00 TOWARDS THE 2005 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPS
(September 8, 2005) The Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) has received a grant of $500,000.00 from the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) towards fielding a National Junior Surfing Team to the 2005 Quiksilver International Surfing Association (ISA) www.isasurf.org World Junior Surfing Championships (WJSC) to be held in Huntington Beach California USA from October 8th to 16th2005. The WJSC is the premier junior event on the world’s surfing calendar.
The JSA has selected the top under-18 and under-16 surfers from the local “Junior Surfing Championship Series” to form the National Junior Surfing Team. The JSA hopes to be able to field an eleven-member squad of athletes and three officials at a total cost of $1.5 million.
The team is to include: BOYS UNDER 18 1. Icah Wilmot (Captain) 2. Tristan English. 3. Junior Hibberts 4. Alex Marley
GIRLS UNDER 18 1. Imani Wilmot 2. Elim Beckford 3. Noelle Jackson
BOYS UNDER 16 1. Ackeam Phillips 2. Shane Simmons 3. Omar Jacks 4. Eneson Lightbourn
The WJSC is an annual event and is hosted by a different member nation of the ISA at each renewal. Surfing America, the newly elected US National Governing body for surfing, www.surfingamerica.org, is on a drive to maximize its exposure and publicity with the hosting of the event this year.
“Jamaica is a newcomer to the surfing world and already we have made a mark,” said JSA President Billy Wilmot. “These young surfers have been training hard and will benefit greatly from the kind of exposure and experience they will receive at an event of this caliber”.
When questioned about Jamaica’s chances at the Championships, Wilmot responded, “We are not contenders for world team title, but we will definitely be making a statement at the championships. Icah, Ackeam and Shane are very talented surfers and will lead the Jamaican charge. It will not be easy and we are the definite underdogs but I think we are going to surprise a few people”.
The JSA has been working tirelessly to promote Jamaica’s surfing on the local and international level over the past six years through its publicity campaign, which has brought the eyes of the surfing world to focus on Jamaica. With numerous articles in the world’s leading surf publications and feature segments in top surf DVD productions and surf TV/Cable programs, Jamaica has made its entrance to the world surfing arena.

NEW ZEALAND FRANCE’S PATRICK BEVEN AND NEW ZEALAND’S MAZ QUINN WIN WILDCARDS INTO QUIKSILVER PRO FRANCE
-Join Dane Reynolds, Miky Picon and Jeremy Flores As Super Wildcards (September 21, 2005) Patrick Beven (Biarritz, France) and Maz Quinn (Gisborne, New Zealand) have won wildcards into the Quiksilver Pro France, joining invited wildcards Dane Reynolds (USA), Miky Picon (FRA) and Jeremy Flores (REU). Beven, 26, won the Quiksilver Trials in half to one metre (2-3 foot) surf at the South West France beachbreak of La Graviere, Hossegor, today, defeating Maz Quinn in the final, with Portugal’s Tiago Peres and Frederick Robin (Reunion Island) placing third and fourth respectively. Due to major injuries to several Top 45 surfers on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, the number of wildcards has been extended for the Quiksilver Pro France – with five surfers now getting the chance to take on the world’s best. There are normally three wildcards in a 48-man WCT event and these were initially awarded to France’s Miky Picon and Californian Dane Reynolds, with another place reserved for the winner of the Quiksilver Trials. However, three WCT surfers have withdrawn this week through injury – Australians Joel Parkinson and Troy Brooks, and Brazilian Bernardo Pigmeu. Brazilian Guilherme Herdy is a seed replacement in the main event, so the injuries opened the door for two more wildcards to take on the world’s best. Reunion Island’s Jeremy Flores was offered a wildcard after he won the ASP European Junior Championship title on the weekend. It was then decided that the other spare wildcard would go to the second place getter at the Quiksilver Trials, as well as the winner. So Quinn gets a start, as well as Beven. Patrick Beven said he was feeling pretty good that he had won the Quiksilver Trials to win a wildcard into the main event. “It’s good having this Quiksilver WCT at my home – I have a lot of friends here,” Beven said. “It’s a special contest for me as these are the best waves on the coast, so I’m pretty happy.” As for coming up against top seeds in the main event, Beven said he was happy to do that: “I’m motivated when I surf against them. I don’t care who’s surfing – I just want to make it.” Quinn, 29, who was a WCT Top 45 competitor in 2002, also had a big smile on his face after the Quiksilver Trials today. “It looks like I’ll be staying a bit longer as I was planning to leave on Monday. I’m so stoked. I’ve been looking forward to a WCT for so long and especially this event because I did well here, placing ninth, when I was on the tour, so I couldn’t be happier,” Quinn, who recently won a three-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event in Spain, said. Reunion Island’s Jeremy Flores, 17, fresh from his major win in the ASP European Junior Championship on the weekend, said he was feeling great. “I’ll try to win. I think I’ve drawn three-time world champion Andy Irons and American Taylor Knox in the first round, so if I win this it will be better than anything,” said Flores, who spends half his time in France and the other half based at Australia’s Newport Beach, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. France’s Miky Picon, 26, of Capbreton, was also at the Quiksilver Trials today observing the competition. Picon, who at eighth position is currently the highest ranked European on the WQS, said he was going to use his wildcard to gain some experience as he needs another good placing to cement a spot on next year’s WCT. “It’ll help to give me some confidence to see the world’s best surfers before I go back on the WQS as I need one more result,” Picon said. “I’m definitely stoked to get a start in the Quiksilver Pro France and I hope we get good swell and wind. The bank at La Graviere (the main contest podium) is absolutely perfect. I’ve surfed here since the sandbank formed 10 months ago.” Jeremy Flores agreed: “It’s a good bank. There’s a big possibility to have great surf like the past few years of the Quiksilver Pro France. It’ll be barreling.” The other main podium has been set up at nearby La Nord, a big-wave spot which last year delivered perfect three to four metre (eight to 12 foot) surf for the final day of the event. And if the swell gets huge, event organizers can move further south to Lafitenia, near the town of St Jean de Luz. The $US270, 000 Quiksilver Pro France, the ninth event on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, has a competition window from Friday 23 September to Sunday 2 October, 2005, and is a critical event in the world title race. With four wins from eight events this year, six-time world champion Kelly Slater is currently leading the ratings by more than 1,000 points ahead of three-time and current world champion Andy Irons (7,574 – 6,528 points). Both have won in France but Irons is the defending event champion, having won the past two Quiksilver Pro France titles, and making the finals three years in a row. It’s going to be a battle royale. Tune into the live webcast of the Quiksilver Pro France at www.quiksilver.com and www.aspworldtour.com The broadcast will be in four languages – English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. RIP CURL GROMSEARCH SERIES – TWO DOWN, TWO TO GO
(September 19, 2005) With two events completed in the Rip Curl GromSearch, things are starting to heat up. The groms are hunting out a trip to Bells Beach Australia to represent New Zealand at the international GromSearch final. The top four surfers in the Under 16 boys and girls get invited to the national final, which will be held in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro in February. The winners of the finals will be awarded entry into the international event at Bells which is held in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro – Bells Beach, Victoria Australia next Easter! Gisborne is the stage for round three of the New Zealand series. Groms will come from far and wide after a relatively quiet winter period event wise. New Zealand’s top juniors including Paco Divers (Sandy Bay), Ryan Hawker (Piha), Billy Stairmand (Rag), Tim O’Conner (Mnt) and Paige Hareb (Tara) will use the event as a final hit out before heading to the World Junior Championships only three days later. Contested over six divisions, there will be a stack of happy groms making the most of the school holidays. For the Under 14 and Under 12 boys and girls, competition will be fierce as each one of them looks to stave off their counterparts. Best of friends on land turn into nothing more than a colour in the water and a mere rival standing in their way of progression to the ultimate prize. The Under 14 Boys will be out to knock Ryan Hawker off the top perch that he has held all year long. It will be a tough ask for the likes of Stefan White (WGM), Mathis Smith (Tara) and local Adam Cranston who have not been able to snatch a win from Hawker all year. It is a different story for the top four Under 14 Girls with all having secured a win this year. However it is a late charge from Maddy Phillips (Piha) that has seen her take out the last three events ahead of the likes of Grace Spiers (WGM), Renee Pearson (Gis) and Annie Stuart (Auck). For the Under 12s, Tane Wallis (Piha) will want to get the number one spot back from Ben Poulter (Waihi Bch) after missing the last event while Ben’s sister Alexis will look to make it three in a row and narrow the gap between her and current number one Grace Spiers. An entry form for the event is attached to this email. Please note entry-closing dates of September 23. Entrants can also obtain entry forms from the official Surfing New Zealand website ¬ www.surfingnz.co.nz.

SOUTH AFRICA SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR TEAM TO TAKE ON THE WORLD'S BEST IN CALIFORNIA (September 26, 2005) After five months of training and preparation the 2005 South African Junior surfing team will leave Cape Town on Monday October 3 for the 2005 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships, which are scheduled to take place at Huntington Beach in California. The team will be one of over 25 that will compete in the event, which gets under way with the traditional Parade of Nations and Sands of the World ceremony on Saturday October 8. The eight days of surfing will begin at two separate towers on the morning of Sunday October 9 and the finals in the Under 18 boys and Under 18 girls divisions as well as the Under 16 boys division will be held on Sunday October 16. This is the third time that the junior divisions have taken place as a separate event from the ISA World Surfing Games, which are held every second year. South Africa was the first ISA nation to host the stand alone official World Junior Championships when 21 nations competed at North Beach in Durban in 2003. Last year 23 nations competed in the championships Tahiti. Huntington Beach is a popular venue according to ISA President Fernando Aguerre who says that over 400 surfers and officials will participate in this year’s tournament.
"We are thrilled at the substantial increase in the number of competitors and teams over the last event", he said and added that "being part of a National team is a life changing experience. The camaraderie, the stoke of wearing national uniforms, carrying the flag and joining people from all over the world at an ISA event is unparalleled." This is certainly true for the South African side that were selected after grueling regional and national trials and whose skills and talent have been honed at the Nelson Mandela Metropole University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth and in numerous domestic competitions since June. Although their major focus will be on achieving glory for themselves and South Africa at the world championships they will have an opportunity to win a title before the event takes place when they defend the annual SANZ Challenge title against the New Zealand team on October 6 at one of the beaches close to Huntington. The World Junior Championships offers medals and trophies to the finalists in each division with the total scores of the top three of the four surfers in each team being combined to determine the winners of the team title and the IOC Trophy. Brazil won the crown in Durban in 2003 and last year Australia struck back. This time the strong USA Team are odds on favourites with South Africa expected to finish in the top four. As far as individual performance goes in the team from South Africa, much will be expected from Jordy Smith, the 2003 World Junior champion and one of the best young surfers to come out of South Africa in a decade. Team captain and current Pro Junior series leader Brandon Jackson is another Durban star who is expected to shine at Huntington while East London's Clinton Gravett and Josch Schmeltzer of Durban have posted some good domestic results of late and along with Smith and Jackson make up a formidable Under 18 group. Team vice captain Klee Strachan of Noordhoek in Cape Town is a classy surfer and along with Durban surfers Kyle Beach and Chad du Toit knows all about the winners circle while Lungani Memani of Port Alfred, the fourth under 16 member, makes history as a member of this South African team. The Under 18 girls group is headed up by two time International contest winner Nikita Robb of East London who only a month or so ago traveled to Huntington Beach to surf in and win the US Open Under 20 girls title. She is backed up by the talented Tarryn Chudleigh of Kommetjie, who in her last domestic contest won both the Under 18 and Under 20 titles and two gutsy Boland surfers, Lisa Mace of Somerset West and Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand. After competing for their respective provinces in the O'Neill SA Junior championships in the Strand from Thursday September 29 to Sunday October 2, the team members will receive their colours at a function in Somerset West on Sunday evening. The team training and preparation at camps held at the Nelson Mandela Metropole University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth as well as weekly individual coaching and analysis was made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Board. The costs of sending the team to compete in the ISA World Junior Championships have also been covered by a grant from the Lotto. JUNIOR SURF STARS SET TO SHINE AT O'NEILL NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Surfing South Africa's premier inter-provincial event for U14, U16 & U18 girls & boys
(September 22, 2005) A glittering array of the country's top junior surf stars are set to shine at the O'Neill National Junior Championships which will take place at the Strand in the Western Cape from Thursday to Sunday next week, September 29 to October 2. The first national surfing tournament to be hosted by the Boland Surfing Association features nine teams packed with the future heroes of SA surfing and will crown national champions in six divisions - U14, U16 and U18 boys and girls - as well as the fiercely contested Freedom Cup awarded to the team accumulating the highest points total. Western Province will be going for a third straight Freedom Cup victory and have a talented team who have been training at the event venue but face tough opposition from the star-studded KwaZulu-Natal lineup who are determined to recapture the trophy they held for seven consecutive years prior to WP's successes in 2003 and 2004. The likes of former ISA world U16 champion Jordy Smith and national junior team captain Brandon Jackson head the KZN challenge in the U18 boys division where they come up against fellow national team member Clinton Gravett (Border), and WP's Brett Shearer, in what promises to be a showcase of cutting edge high performance surfing. Talented Bolander Peder Christiansen will have a home town advantage while KZN's Rudi Palmboom and Josh Redman and WP captain Wesley Grey have the surfing skills and repertoire of manoeuvres to upset their more established rivals. Rosanne Hodge and Border teammate Nikita Robb are the only two defending champions in the event and they will start as favourites for the U18 and U16 girls titles respectively. Hodge's international experience and multitude of national titles should see her overcome the challenges posed by Nicole Annells (Southern KZN) and the KZN duo of Danielle le Roux and Kate Goldreich. Robb, despite winning two international events this year, faces a sterner test as WP's rising star Tarryn Chudleigh, last year's U14 champ, has beaten the East Londoner regularly in domestic competition recently, while their national teammates Lisa Mace who hails from the Strand and Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand could force upsets in this division. The U16 boys' event looks likely to go to one of the trio of Klee Strachan (WP), Chad du Toit and Kyle Beach, both KZN, all of whom have achieved national honours in higher age groups this year. But they will not have it all their own way as Lungani Memani (Border), local Daniel Mace, WP's Aran Moore, Devon Mundow (Southern KZN), Chris Leppan from Zululand and EP surfers Justin Grey and Faizel Smith will be keen to upset the formbook. The most open division is the U14 boys where hosts of emerging stars are set to produce fireworks in their battle for glory. The contenders include the consistently brilliant Shaun Joubert and fellow Southern Cape representative Dales Staples, Boland locals Jacob Mellish and David Solomon, Tyde Gatke of Border, KZN's Blake Freegard and Ryan Klynsmith along with the entire WP squad of the Matthew Bromley, Brendan Gibbens and the Woods brothers, James and Thomas. There are also a number of contenders for the U14 girls' title including KZN's Heidi Palmboom and Sarah Baum, Holly Armstrong and Tanika Hoffman from WP, former Strand local Bianca Buitendag now surfing for Southern Cape, and Danielle Johnson from the Academy team. While the final position of each surfer contributes towards their team's points tally so every competitor plays a vital role in trying to win the Freedom Cup, the tournament also has its lighter moments and the inaugural O'Neill Superfreak Show should produce some hilarious scenes just before the finals on Sunday. Contestants, management and parents are invited to enter the Superfreak Show and 'Go Weird To Win' by donning the weirdest, most outlandish or downright ridiculous costume and then paddling out and riding a wave. The most outrageous individual or group earns a cool R1 000 in crisp banknotes courtesy of O'Neill and Elgin Dew and the lure of hard cash is bound to attract some bizarre performances from everyone in attendance. The 2005 O'Neill SA Junior Championships, featuring more than 160 of the country's top surfers 18 years of age and younger, begins on Thursday September 29 and culminates with the finals on Sunday October 2.
