Day 1 : GREAT TUBES OPEN THE REEF CLASSIC 2005 AT MARESIAS BEACH

Wagner Pupo and his son Miguel Pupo were the highlights of Day 1

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 October, 2005 : -  The “Brazilian Leg” for the end of year 2005 was officially inaugurated at 9 a.m. with its first heat of the Reef Classic 2005 in São Sebastião – SP. This event series will be running until November 9th and started very good at Maresias. Besides the rain, the Maresias waves showed great tubes for the competitors this Wednesday. Hizunomê Bettero, from Ubatuba, North Shore of São Paulo State, won the first heat of the day and the highlights pointed to the Pupo family, with dad Wagner and son Miguel, both winning their heats, during the round of 160. The competition runs until Sunday on the most famous place to party at the North Shore of São Paulo State.

During day 1, only competitors with few rating  points were in the water. The top seeds, as the WCT Top Athletes, will get in the comp in the round of 64, when the US$ 75,000 prize money will be on offer in this 4 star WQS event, plus 1,500 rating points to the winner. The morning calls are always at 8 a.m. to start the event that runs up to 4 or 5 p.m.. The heats are available live at www.waves.com.br and www.aspsouthamerica.com.br .

Maresias is one of the greatest tube spots in Brazil and early this morning Hizunomê Bettero showed that the only way was getting deep inside of those barrels. “ The heat was great. I caught few tubes right in the beginning and then I got calmer ´till the end of it”, said Hizunomê, after an easy victory against brazilian fellows Diego Santos and Rodrigo Waslawick.

Bettero was one of the competitors that approved the great idea of Reef to organize a championship on the shore of São Paulo State, which was out of the World Tour since 2000. “ It´s awesome!!! We stayed a long time out of the tour and a champ like this is very important for the São Paulo surfers crew, riding known waves. During the last few years, there was only the south event, for the world tour, and now we get the chance to compete here. Thanks to Reef that brought this event up here, ´cause is a potential tube spot” commended Hizunomê Bettero.

DAD AND SON – Another highlight during the first day of the REEF CLASSIC 2005 was the participation of experienced surfer Wagner Pupo and his son Miguel Pupo, with both winning this Wednesday. Dad, 37 years-old, defeated South African Damien Fahrenfort and Brazilian Marcelo Coutinho, on heat 4. During heat 9, his son, 13 years-old, beat the Brazilians Andrew Serrano and Ricardo Ferreira.

“I´m stoked, competing for the first time in an ASP World Tour event. I was a little nervous at the beginning, but I got to catch a good wave, passing in first place to round of 128”  spoke Miguel, who would like to compete against his father. “ I would love to get into the water competing against him, but I don´t know if we are gonna meet in some heat later on.”  said Miguel. Dad Wagner also think that could be a great meeting and says something: “ I can´t lose!!! If that happens, I´ll be retiring myself” made a little joke Wagner Pupo, who was also competing the last heat of this Wednesday. Once they live in São Sebastião, they know very well the Maresias waves.

“ It was a great Reef initiative, bringing the comp here. There are always perfect waves in Maresias; it´s one of the best spots of Brazil and São Paulo North Shore and it was about time to have an ASP World Tour event here again”  showed it off Wagner, who also spoke about his starting at REEF CLASSIC 2005. ” I know this place very well and I was just waiting to catch some tubes. I found two good ones that gave me the victory” . The best of those scored an 8.17 and the other got a 6.83 adding up to 15 unbeatable points in the beginning round.

REEF CLASSIC 2005 is exclusively sponsored by REEF and supported by Youth Sport and Leisure Secretary of São Paulo Government, deputy Turco Loco; São Sebastião City Hall; Uluwatu Surf Shop, SunPeak, Overboard, Ilha do Mel, Jacob´s, Star Surf, Bleat, Central Surf, WQSurf, Star Point, Píer Point, High Point, KYW e J´Bay, in addition to Camera Press Visual Communication, THT Fabrics and SKY Print. The event is a conjugated realization of ASP South America with São Paulo Federation of Surf – FPS -, São Sebastião Association of Surfing – ASSS - and official medias as Fluir Magazine, SPORTV, www.waves.terra.com.br  and also live at www.aspsouthanmerica.com.br

Day 1 : Valinha quebra em Maresias
