Day 2 : Another good day at Maresias Reef Classic 2005
Brazilians André Silva and Sávio Carneiro get the best wave scores this Thursday
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 October, 2005 : - The Top Seeds of the REEF CLASSIC 2005 will only start to compete on Friday, in São Sebastião, and the brazilians are the showing off athletes so far, at Maresias. This Thursday was another day with a lot of tubes and the most perfect one was riden by brazilian André Silva, getting the best wave score today – a 9,5 – and registered a new record with 17.33 points out of 20 possible ones for the REEF CLASSIC 2005. Before him, Sávio Carneiro had already got a tied score – 9,0 – with Diego Santos, during the first day of the contest.
The show must go on this Friday, when the Top Seeds start in the 35th event of the World Qualifying Series – WQS. The Tops Seed list is filled with the world surfers elite as the Australian Kirk Flintoff, South Africans Greg Emslie and Travis Logie and the Brazilians Paulo Moura, Peterson Rosa, Victor Ribas, Marcelo Nunes, Raoni Monteiro, Renan Rocha and Bernardo Pigmeu. The morning calls are always at 8 a.m. to start the event that runs up to 4 or 5 p.m.. The heats are available live at http://waves.terra.com.br/ e www.aspsouthamerica.com.br
The Brazilians were the highlights during the last couple days and few foreigner surfers had passed the rounds of the REEF CLASSIC 2005. One of them was the Australian Sam Page, who defeated Brazilians Jadson André and Dell Gama, getting right behind another Brazilian Sávio Carneiro.

He´s been to Brazil before to compete at Costa do Sauípe – Bahia - and didn´t know Maresias beach yet. He was also gawky with the natural beauty of the place. “It´s a very nice place, very wild, it looks like the Jurassic Park”, compared Sam Page, who also commended the wave conditions. “The waves are extremely fun, with great tubes and they give you a good riding water wall to try many manouvers”, analized Page.
Sávio Carneiro competed in the heat 7 of the round of 128 of the REEF CLASSIC 2005. Catching a deep and spectacular barrel, he scored a 9, defeating Australian Sam Page and Brazilians Jadson André and Dell Gama. These last two were eliminated from the contest.
“I love to surf Maresias´ waves, which I consider my home-break. It´s the place I´m always surfing and the most difficult thing is to get placed to catch the right one” taught Sávio, who lives in São Paulo city and is always practicing in Maresias. “I was also affraid of losing the heat, using this tactic, ´cause I was out there waiting, waiting for the good one. I was lucky and she barreled up to me. I´ve got a good tube then. The judges revaluate my presentation very well and I was so happy with that, ´cause I was not surfing good enough in contests lately. I´m so stoked”, said Sávio Carneiro.

BEST APPEARANCE – Three heats after, Brazilian André Silva simply broke all the records of the REEF CLASSIC 2005. “I made a little joke with Sávio, after his 9 wave score, saying: Calm, be cool bro, I didn´t get into the water yet!!“ told André, who always has nice appearances when the waves get barrelling.
“I spend the whole year practicing in tubular waves. I grew up in Titanzinho – Fortaleza Brazil, where there is also a tubular wave, and it is the manouver I like the best. If the wind is offshore and the waves are around 3-5 feet, I´m not worried about anything else. I only think to catch the most numbers of barrels I can. I caught an excellent wave close to the end of the heat; I rode it deep inside for about 5 seconds and for those who know what is been in a tube can feel what I´m saying” spoke André, who also commended the Reef iniciative of transferring the event from Torres to São Sebastião.
”It was the best thing for us. Torres is good, the crowd is great, parties etc., but Maresias is the best. If there is a good swell, the tubes work perfect here and the comp gets more thrilling. There is also a big crowd here offering a nice return and feedback for the sponsors too. Congratulations to REEF for this decision and I hope to keep up my surf for the next days and I wish that the barrels keep working ´till the end of the contest”, cheers up André.
