    Reef Classic

ASP 4 Star WQS Mens Event

    Maresias, Sao Paulo-Brazil
    19 - 23 October 2005

Pedro Henrique wins the Reef Classic and gets his 2006 WCT slot

Jihad Kohdr defended the title, but finished in 3rd

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 October, 2005 : - Pedro Henrique, 23 years-old, is the new Brazilian rookie in the ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) and his slot was confirmed winning the title of the REEF CLASSIC 2005 is São Sebastião, São Paulo. The title came in the last seconds of the great final this morning on Maresias beach. Brazil and South Africa fought for the title again this year, like it happened in 2004, when Jihad Kohdr and Greg Emslie did the final, with victory coming to Brazil. This time, Brazilian Pedro Henrique upset Travis Logie in another competitve heat and once again a Brazilian won the battle. American Dean Randazzo and Brazilian Jihad Kohdr finished in 3rd.

Everybody is heading down to Florianópolis Island, Santa Catarina, Brazil, now, where two more ASP events will be on, until November 9th and the WQS and WCT World Titles can be decided before the Hawaiian season.

Lingering sets and small waves, around 1-2 feet were on offer this morning for the REEF CLASSIC 2005, but the champion Pedro Henrique got a 9.17 on his first wave of the quarters, getting the best wave score of this round that started at 7 a.m. Pedrinho´s invincibility was lost in the semi-final for South African Travis Logie, who got a 9 and an 8.27, registering the second best average heat points – 17.27 points out of 20 possible ones.

The pay back came in the final seconds. Logie had got the best wave score of the final – 8.17 – and Pedrinho needed a 6.61 to get an phenomenal upset against the South African for the REEF CLASSIC history. Around 10 seconds to the heat end, Brazilian Pedro Henrique found an opening right hand and didn´t waste it. He did many hard turns on it and the judges gave him a 6.73 to confirm his victory. Pedrinho got the US$ 10,000 dollars prize and the scores were 13.23 points for him against 13.10 for South African Travis Logie (2nd), 12.07 for the title defender Brazilian Jihad Kohdr (3rd) and 10.80 for the American Dean Randazzo.

“I´m very stoked. In Portugal, I was winning the final and, in the end, I couldn´t catch a good one and Tiago Pires caught the one and upset me. I think everything gets its time to happen and today was my turn to win.” told Pedro Henrique, who is 5th place now in the WQS rating and overpass the 9,000 points, confirming his name in the 2006 WCT elite.

“Since Portugal, when I got closer to the WCT slot, I started to do a preparation job, practicing new manouvers and working my muscles up; everything towards the WCT. I know it´s gonna be very tough, but I want to get there and do my best. Adriano de Souza is also there, it´s the new generation coming up to represent Brazil in the WCT”  said the first Brazilian to get the ASP Pro Junior World Champion title in Hawaii - 2000; Adriano de Souza also brought this title to Brazil in 2003.

Pedro Henrique confessed that the worst thing was getting up so early to compete this morning in the REEF CLASSIC 2005. “I´m a surfer  who needs an hour earlier to start up, ´cause I take a little long to wake up. So, I was up at 5:30 and at 6 a.m. I went surfing and practice with my coach Pedro Robalinho. We found the right spot to surf and during my first wave I scored that 9.17. I knew there was something special reserved for me. Thanks God for everything. I suffered a lot to get here, competing many champs passing through many troubles. I´m very happy today, seeing my WCT dream coming true.”  thanked Pedro Henrique, not crying this time as he is used to do.

The other three finalists commended about the Brazilian rookie. “It was very difficult staying out of the water, just waiting his score to know if I would win or not. He deserved,! Pedro surfed very well during the whole contest and I only have to wish him good luck in the 2006 WCT.”, wished  Travis Logie, the only surfer who got into the WQS 15 list to the WCT, with the REEF CLASSIC 2005 results. He raise from 20th up to 14th, but is already confirmed in the World Elite, because he is among the 27 athletes of the ASP main division – WCT.

Brazilian Jihad Kohdr needed to finish first or second to get into the 15 list in this first ASP event of the “Brazilian Leg”, the REEF CLASSIC 2005. He also raised up some positions, from 25th to 21st postponing his chances to the next 6 star WQS event that begins this Tuesday, in Florianópolis Island, at Praia Mole. “I tried to defend the title as far as I could. Congratulations to Pedro Henrique and his victory during the last seconds. It was perfect to put him into the ASP World Elite. Let´s go to Paria Mole now. If I get into the finals there again, I´ll certainly be closer to get my goals, a WCT slot”, spoke Jihad Kohdr.

Dean Randazzo : photo Ivan Storti - Waves Brazil

Former Dean Randazzo was very happy with his result. The American almost couldn´t compete in the REEF CLASSIC 2005, because he got late for his first heat of the contest. Australian Chris Davidson were absent and Randazzo got another chance. After that he went through his heats until gets into the final. During the final, was leading the heat for a little while, but was very happy being in 4th. “The waves were small, but with a good formation actually. The only problem was the sets, too lingering. I´m very glad, ´cause I didn´t wish to get so far as I did.” spoke Dean Randazzo.

The American took home US$ 2,400 dollars, plus 1,005 points. The REEF CLASSIC 2005 gather 155 surfers from nine countries in São Sebastião, São Paulo. Brazilian Jihad Kohdr earned US$ 3,000 dollars, plus 1,095 points. South African Travis Logie got US$ 5,000 dollars, plus 1,290 points. The US$ 10,000 dollars prize, plus 1,500 points went to Brazilian and 2006 WCT rookie Pedro Henrique, who lives in Saquarema beach, Rio de Janeiro State, since 1986, and started surfing in 1988, turning a professional surfer in 2000, when won the ASP Pro Junior World Championship title.

    Day 5 : Dupla vitória

Travis Logie : Ader Oliveira - Waves Brazil
