PUNTA GALEA INVITATIONAL BIG WAVE CONTEST

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 October, 2005 : - -  This is an Invitational big wave contest (traditional paddling). 12 invited big wave riders in the following competition format: two heats with six riders each and a final with the best six riders. Time: an hour each heat. The scores are given by the riders, those that are in the water and those that are on shore. 3.000,00 € prizemoney: the biggest wave, the best surfer, the most radical take-off and the biggest wipe out.

Waves have to be at least  4 metre high (12 feet).

Riders to be chosen as follows:
1 by Getxo Surf Taldea,
2 by the official sponsor, and 1
by each main sponsor (2), the rest by the organizers.

The event will be entirely held on a boat at sea.
The event will take place in one day from December 3th to January 15th.

The organization will have a website (www.tresesenta.com) and a telephone available for the public to get information about the date of the contest. The contest will be announced three days in advance, according to the weather forecast and the opinion of the competitors. On shore, a speaker will comment on the sessions to the audience attending the contest.

EVENT VENUE: Next to Getxo, town inhabited by 90,000 people where surfing is one the most popular and practised sports among young people. The birthplace of some of the best European surfers such as the Acero brothers, Iker Fuentes, Jorge Imbert, Gonzalo Gandarias...  Getxo belongs to the metropolitan area of Bilbao, where 1,000,000 live.

It’s a long wave, about 200 metres long, and it can be very tall and in good condition. It breaks at the bottom of a 60 metre cliff, on the righthand side of the Abra bay opposite Bilbao Commercial Harbour and it’s very difficult to get there from the shore, so it’s not often surfed. Easily reached by boat, less than three miles away from the Puerto Deportivo of Getxo, where the contest headquarters would be placed.

The place is perfect, as it can be observed both from the shore (people can see the wave from the cliff) and from the sea (by boat).

EL CORREO: The most popular and read newspaper in the Basque Country.
EL DIARIO VASCO: The most popular and read newspaper in the province of Gipuzkoa.

PUNTO RADIO-VOCENTO: The most popular radio station in Spain.

MEDIA COVERAGE
3SESENTA magazine: 1 advertising page in the November issue with the poster of the contest and an article in the same issue explaining the event. An article on the event in the February issue (about six pages)
EL CORREO: Three adverts (about 1/6 page) of the event.
EL DIARIO VASCO: Three adverts (about 1/6 page) of the event
CADENA 100 and PUNTO RADIO: 30 adverts before the event, mentioning the official sponsor.

The press office of the event will provide all the media (specialized, local press, radio and television) with information.
Posters: 1,000 posters of the event will be printed. 200 will be posted to surf shops in Spain and the rest will be distributed in the area surrounding the event venue.

OTHER MEDIA: There are other media interested in the contest, such as AXN, TVE (TELENORTE), EUSKAL TELEBISTA, ANTENA3...
