4. ISA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
(October 28, 2005) At the recent Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Huntington an evening Development Workshop was conducted to review progress in this area. Presentations on the philosophy surrounding accreditation of coaches, judges and surfschools and also the benefits to their host National Organizations were provided. ISA members present were very heartened to see the group numbering 60 persons and also the seriousness in which the subject was regarded. It seems that many member associations are just now beginning to deal with questions of coaching standards, surfschool operating standards, judging standards, promotional opportunities in the surfschool area and professional development of staff in general. From this meeting we also appreciate that our business models may not be universally acceptable in their current form. During and after the presentations we had very good feedback from experienced persons at the meeting and we have taken their comments on board concerning marketing and structure of the programs. Overall we had a valuable insight into the ideas of member nations. We had a number of enquiries concerning coaching and judging licenses and License contracts with South Africa, Barbados, Costa Rica and Ecuador were completed. Over the next 2 months we will be working to improve the packages to suit other countries wishing to be involved. We are also working to try to involve sponsors in our programs. Marcos Conde is working already on material for programs in 2006 in Barbados and Costa Rica. Glen Elliot is coordinating the judging presentations and I am overseeing the programs generally. If there are any questions member nations have on these areas, we are available by email at any time. Re the building project, foundations are now laid for Bali’s first Youth and Community Centre supported by CS Australia and friends. The `Buy a Brick for Bali’ has been a great success now with some A$165,000 raise towards the final amount of $180,000. Ado says `Guys are stoked to hear that we are offering this service free to locals as a place they can hang out, learn English, gain other skills and surf”. There are 5 building teams needed to assist in finalizing the project in Feb. 06. See www.christiansurfers.org.au for fundraiser or contact Richard Agius if you are interested in serving on a building team maltman71@yahoo.com.au Indonesia – Last month 2 father and son teams from Australia joined South Africa CS on a boat trip. The ladies’ title was taken out by Sarah Bentley, and the younger division titles were taken by Jayce Robinson and Lewis Clinton in the Cadet and Youth surfing categories respectively. The bodyboard competition saw Alex Winkworth beat Steve Wright. During the weekend there was a focus on Tsunami Surf Relief UK, who continue to raise funds for the Tsunami affected areas in Sri Lanka. JC Surfboards Hawaii (John Carper) very generously donated a board for raffling, which raised around £371. Phil Williams from CSUK phil@christiansurfers.co.uk reports that they have had two work teams visit Sri Lanka following on their fundraising with www.tsunamisurfrelief.co.uk UK paddle-a-thon on the Severn Bore raises ₤2000 for Sri Lanka tsunami relief and Bali project. USA – two months ago CSUS and Surfing the Nations teamed up for a special visit to Sri Lanka and Aragum Bay where they distributed clothing, supplies and assisted in purchasing boat, nets and other things for locals. Awesome time. CSUS Oregon chapter is sending a team to Santa Cruz during October 17-23rd, where they will be serving meals along side the CS Santa Cruz chapter at the Cold Water Classic. Contact Jason Menke jason@oregonsurfers.com for more information. CSO, desiring to promote higher education amongst surfers, is also looking to award a college bound senior a scholarship. The team has adopted the poorer community up Chicama way and specifically two disadvantaged boys they sponsor. HAWAII 'LITTLE TONY' LIVING OUT DREAM
(October 18, 2005) The surfer whose first name means "Little Tony" is feeling pretty big right now. One day after winning a world championship in his age division, Tonino Benson was still surfing on air. "I woke up (yesterday) and thought it was all a dream," said Benson, 15. "I guess I'm still kind of soaking it in." Benson won the Boys Under 16 division of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships on Sunday at Huntington Beach, Calif. The contest is considered the world championship for surfers under 18. Benson, whose real first name is Anthony, beat more than 100 surfers from 28 different countries to win his division. Led by Benson, Hawai'i also won the team championship for the first time. Because of its storied history in the sport, Hawai'i was allowed to enter as its own nation. "I had a feeling we could win it as a team," said Benson, who is from Kailua, Kona. "When we got there, I watched the other teams surf and I knew we were better."
Over the eight days in the contest, no one was better than Benson in the under 16 division. Hawai'i head coach Rainos Hayes said he knew Benson had world championship potential. He just didn't know it would be fulfilled this early.
"His technical surfing is so great, I knew he was capable of something like this," Hayes said. "But for kids at that age, it's tough to keep surfing at a high level, day after day, in a contest like this. I was pleasantly surprised that Tonino pulled it off." Hawai'i assistant coach Bert Ishimaru added: "Before this contest, we thought of Tonino as a diamond in the rough. He had all the skills. It was just a matter of putting it all together." Benson prepared for the contest by practicing daily — in small waves and big waves — at a spot called Banyans near his Kona home. While Tonino was surfing, his father Peter would film the sessions in 15- to 20-minute intervals. "We'd make it just like a contest heat," Peter said. "Then we'd go back home and watch the video and try to score his waves."
The practice paid off in Huntington Beach, even though the waves were generally small and choppy.
Jack Shipley, who represented Hawai'i on the international judging panel, said of Tonino's performance: "He didn't put up phenomenal scores, but for the conditions and the competition he was up against, he was very impressive. He was doing stuff in the junk waves nobody else could do — that's how you win." Tonino is capable of pulling off spectacular maneuvers, but he said he made sure to stick to the basics at Huntington Beach. "Sometimes, I can go a little overboard with my moves because I want to look good," he said. "But this time, I just concentrated on making my heats. But if there was room for a big move, I went for it." Part of Tonino's sense of balance can be traced to another sport. His parents enrolled him in gymnastics when he was 4. "He was kind of a natural in that, too. He could do all the backflips," his mother Mary said. "I'm sure that helped him with his surfing." By age 9, Tonino was addicted to surfing. By age 14, his parents enrolled him in home school so he could practice surfing during the days. "I used to go out surfing with him when he was really young, but he passed me by a couple years ago," his father said. Tonino's surfing improved so much this year; his coaches started entering him in some of the smaller professional events. Sponsorships by Billabong, Oakley, Reef Brazil and Hawaiian Island Creations are paying for most of his travel. He even stayed in California this week to enter a pro meet in Santa Cruz. "That's the only way I'll get better," Tonino said. "I want to be ready for the pros by the time I'm 18." Tonino is already in elite company when it comes to world titles. Current pros Kalani Robb and Joel Centeio are the only other surfers from Hawai'i to win junior world championships as amateurs. After his victory, Tonino was treated to a steak dinner by one of the team's sponsors. He also received congratulatory calls from pro surfers Shane Dorian and Rob Machado. "We feel like this is his reward for all that effort he put into it," his mother said. "Not just in surfing, but with his school work, too. He took his books up with him last week and he made sure to get his study time in." Tonino and the rest of the Hawai'i team must also focus on defending their titles. The 2006 World Junior Championships will be held at Brazil in May. "We're going to have to pick that team soon," Ishimaru said. "And obviously, we have to start with Tonino." IRELAND
IRELAND FINISHES 8TH (October 30,2005) Ireland has finished 8th place overall at the European Surfing Championships that concluded today in Costa De Caperica, Portugal. Contributing to the improved team ranking, up one places from last time when Ireland finished 9th at the Championships in 2003, were certainly the performances in the Open division of Cain Kilcullen, Enniscrone and Mike Moran, Bundoran. With solid performances both surfers made it in to the elite top 24, with Mike finishing 24th and Cain 17th. Nicole Morgan surfed well too finishing 11th overall in the women's division. Congratulation to everybody on the team.

NEW ZEALAND
PIHA GOES OFF FOR VODAFONE SURF SESSIONS (October 22,2 005) Piha reached capacity today with a crowd of at least 15,000 people when New Zealand took on the World at the Vodafone Surf Sessions. The New Zealand surfers – Maz Quinn, Daniel Kereopa, Bobby Hansen and Morehu Roberts – took on world team of Parko, Occy, Irons and Garcia. The World team won the overall competition scoring 60 points compared to New Zealand’s 50. Cars were turned away about from 2pm when parking at the West Coast beach reached its limit. There was even a rumour that people were parking at nearby Karekare Beach, some 10 kilometres away and walking in. The first round of four heats was a tie, with Maz Quinn, Daniel Kereopa and Andy Irons winning their heats. The second round – a tag team competition, saw Andy Irons seal the victory for his team and proving his status as the power surfer. Andy nailed the highest wave of the round scoring a 9.0 out of a possible 10 and stole the hearts of the crowd with a number of phenomenal moves. Conditions at Piha were “contestable” with waves of one metre and the rain holding off. Early in the competition Andy Irons treated the capacity crowd to the awesome sight of an aerial manoeuvre to score 9.8. Local Piha icon and commentator Indian Nick told the crowd he was about to faint at Irons’ wave. However the New Zealand team was not to be eclipsed when Maz Quinn executed some powerful turns producing a ton of spray. At the prize giving after the competition, surf legend Sunny Garcia said he was amazed with the hospitality the world team had received since arriving in New Zealand. “We don’t even get treated this way on the ASP World Tour!,” said Sunny. He went on to say that with the crowd’s support he was sure the New Zealand surfers could go a long way internationally. Current World Champion Andy Irons said it had been the most generous crowd he’s ever surfed in front of and that he’s looking forward to definitely returning to New Zealand in the future. Gisborne local Maz Quinn said, “This is the most people I’ve seen at a surfing event anywhere in the world.” Greg Townsend, Chief Executive Surfing New Zealand says the success of the event is sure to help attract the world’s top surfers to our shores in the future. The World team picked up a trophy board designed by Aaron Kereopa, Daniel’s brother, which featured the Maori god of the elements in its design. The day’s activity was topped off by the Vodafone Signing Session where the fans got to meet their heroes face to face. For further information please call: Ben Kennings – Surfing NZ, 021 227 8732. COMBOS, COUNTBACKS AND DUAL WINS AT THE RIP CURL GROMSEARCH (October 1, 2005) They called him the ‘Timinator’ on day one and his form held true as he stormed away to win the Under 16 Boys division in event three of the Rip Curl GromSearch at Gisborne today (Sunday). The surf cranked beyond expectation in the morning but the evil southerly wind whipped up the coast to worsen 2-3ft swell conditions considerably by the time Tim O’Connor came in the victor in the last heat of the day. The other three surfers required a combination of scores in excess of 10 points to catch O’Connor’s 14.50 heat score and it wasn’t until the last wave surfed by Mathis Smith (Tara) that any of his competitors came with in reach of him. The win was O’Connor’s second on the Rip Curl GromSearch Series. By way of coming second, Smith now secures his spot in the national final along with O’Connor and also the injured Ryan Hawker who won event two. Louie Wray-Murane (Muriwai) held second place until the dying stages of the final when Smith pipped him. Whangamata’s Braedon Williams finished in fourth place. Playing the waiting game can wreck havoc with a surfers nerves but patience is a virtue. Wini Paul (Sandy Bay) had all the patience in the world in the Under 16 Girls final and with one minute to go she locked in only her second scoring ride but it was enough to win what turned out to be the closest heat of the event. The deteriorating surf might have had an impact on her strategy but surfing a brilliant 7.50-point ride late in the heat shows a lot of character. The fact that her top-scoring wave was better than Paige Hareb’s (Tara) top scoring wave of 6.75 was enough for the judges to split the two surfers after finishing originally finishing in first equal. Hareb was unfortunate not to build on her two early scores of 6.75 and 5.0 and had to settle for second. Jessica Welch (Gis) and Laura Rishworth (Mnt) had to settle for third and fourth respectively after the surf conditions got the better of them. Hareb and Paul took care of Pae Pou (Riv) in semi one while Welch and Rishworth eliminated Maddy Phillipps (Auck). The Under 14 Boys were dominated by the Gisborne groms so rightly one of the three Gisborne surfers won the final. The odds were good and it was Buck Woods who came through with the goods to win. A superb start to the final had Woods leading with two six-point rides that were good enough to hold off the other three for the remainder of the final. It was Woods first win in the Rip Curl GromSearch Series and the confident young man had a grin from ear to ear. His buddy Jonnie Hicks came back strong late in the heat with the highest wave of the final, a 7.0-point ride, but fell a meagre 0.10 short of the win. The only non- ‘Gizzy boy’ was Karne Pitcher (WGM) who fought hard but finished in third just ahead of Jay Paddock in fourth.
It was a disappointed Landem Collier (Gis) who was eliminated by Paddock and Pitcher in the first semi while Adam Cranston (Gis) was put out of the event by Woods and Hicks in the second semi. Whangamata’s Grace Speirs showed some exceptional form in the Under 14 Girls final to back up her win in the Under 12s. The lack of swell on the east coast obviously hasn’t had an impact on her surfing as she powered her way to dominating wins in both divisions. Her 14.25 total heat score in the final was highlighted by a long ride that netted her 7.5 to strengthen her lead at the midway point. Muriwai’s India Wray-Murane left her best until last scoring 4.75 on her last wave to advance to second by the end of the final. Renee Pearson (Gis) and Maddy Phillips (Piha) rounded out the four finalists in third and fourth respectively.
On his return to the Rip Curl GromSearch, Tane Wallis (Piha) stormed back into the number one position winning the final with a score of 12.75. Looking nervous, Wallis took control midway through the 25-minute finale with an excellent 7.75-point wave to back up an earlier 5.0. After playing around together all day the following four surfers were just as close in the water but it was the confident Ben Poulter (Waihi Beach) who placed runner up with 10.0 points ahead of Peri Matenga (Mnt), Brad Pitcher (WGM) and Kahu Craig Te Ranga (Waihi Beach). Earlier, double finalist Grace Spiers was too good for her fellow competitors in the Under 12 Girls as she stormed away with a massive win notching up a whopping 16.0 in the final. Her biggest rival Alexis Poulter (Waihi Beach) couldn’t find her rhythm to keep up with Speirs and finished in second ahead of Rosa Thompson (WGM), Ella Williams (WGM) and first time competitor Kate Grealish (Wel). In a first for the Rip Curl GromSearch Series this year, no less than twenty groms, boys and girls, took to the water in an expression session where the surfers were scored on their single best manoeuvre. Fortune had it that local surfer Jonnie Hicks found the best little section and busted his fins out on a backhand aerial to take home the first prize of a Rip Curl boardbag.

SOUTH AFRICA OUT OF TOWNER SCOOPS RHINOFISH TITLE (October 23, 2005) Out of town surfer Stanley Badger (St Francis) scooped the Volcom Rhinofish Pro-Am title away from local favourites Shane Thorne (Bluff), Josh Redman (Morningside) and Shane Warren (Bluff) at the weekend. Contestable one to 1.5-metre waves with moderate north-easterly winds and a strong side wash at Durban's Dairy Beach tested the younger surfers' abilities and resulted in some high scoring rides. Badger's unrelenting attack in the powerful onshore surf saw him finish streaks ahead of opponents in the Pro-Am final where he opened his account with 8 points out of a possible 10 and sealed victory with a credible tally of 14.5 out of a possible 20 points. Thorne (Bluff), winner of last season's VQS Championship Final, trailed behind Badger with a top score of 5.5 out of a possible ten points to finish second ahead of an exhausted Redman (Morningside) who surfed back to back finals; Bluff surfer Warren placed fourth. Tamarys de Maroussem (Westbrook) dominated the Girl's final to secure victory over Sarah Johnston (Warner Beach) who has recently recovered from a shoulder injury. Heidi Palmboom (Bluff) once again proved that she has what it takes to be the best when she emerged out of a field of 30 girls to finish third ahead of older peer Michelle Imerson (Warner Beach). Rudy Palmboom (Bluff) was in sensational form during the junior final and was able to overcome a brilliant performance from Chad du Toit (Berea) with a high scoring wave in the dying seconds of the heat. Josh Redman (Morningside) improved on his fourth place finish in the recent Elephant fish to take third away from Kyle Lane (Umhlanga). The Grom final saw a battle between three south coast surfers and a north coast local. Kyle Whitaker (Uvongo) posted a convincing win with 8 out of a possible ten points, which ousted Brett Palmboom (St Mikes) into second place. Blake Freeguard (Umdloti) had been the event standout scoring exceptional rides like 9.5's in his earlier rounds but seemed to have run out of steam in the final when he took third from Ryan Klynsmith (Winkelspruit). In addition to cash prizes and generous Volcom product, all of the finalists were thrilled to walk away wearing a new pair of DVS Shoes. The Volcomstone series is open to all with age groups varying from Groms (14 and under), to Juniors (15 to 17), Girls (all ages) and Pro-ams (opens). The VQS carries a total prize purse of R35 000. The SA tour is divided into three regions and each area has been allocated a name. The final Volcom event of 2005, the Western Cape Baboonfish, takes place on November 5 and 6. The top four placed surfers in each division from the Eastern Cape, KZN and the Western Cape are automatically invited to surf in the themed VQS Championship Final that will be held in Durban in early 2006. The winners in Durban will then qualify to compete in the VQS World Championships held in Newport Beach in May 2006 where they will take on qualifiers from Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, Europe, Japan and America. There is an added incentive for the winner of the Pro-Am division who will receive a free air ticket to the VQS Championship finals at Newport Beach. The VQS Tour is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA). Red Bull provided an energy centre with much needed refreshments.

WESTERN PROVINCE RETAIN TEAM TITLE AT O'NEILL SA JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS (October 2 2005) The Western Province junior surfing team claimed the team title at the 2005 O’Neill South Africa Junior Surfing Championships for the third successive time when they scored a narrow but deserved victory over arch-rivals KwaZulu-Natal who had won the Freedom Cup for seven consecutive years prior to WP’s first triumph in 2003. WP’s success was earned largely by their younger surfers who dominated the under 14 boys’ division where they took the top three positions through Brendan Gibbens, Matthew Bromley and James Woods, who finished in that order. WP’s Tanika Hoffman also claimed gold in the u/14 girls, Klee Strachan won the u/16 boys, Tarryn Chudleigh was runner-up in the u/16 girls and Megan Kelly took third in the u/18 girls. KZN matched WP’s dominance by filling the top three places in the u/18 boys through Jordy Smith, Josh Redman and Rudy Palmboom and claimed second (Chad du Toit) and fourth (Kyle Beach) in the u/16 boys but stumbled in the girls’ events where they could only manage two fourth places via Danielle le Roux (u/18) and Sarah Baum (u/14). “We’re stoked!” exclaimed WP team captain Wesley Grey after the awards ceremony on the beach at the Strand, admitting “Although we have a good team this year we were surprised to win. Our coach didn’t think we’d done it, especially when KZN got three into the u/18 boys final.” Border, whose girls came up trumps when Rosanne Hodge (u/18) and Nikita Rob (u/16) successfully defended the titles they won last year and Alice McGregor clinched the runner-up berth in the u/14’s, held on to third place in the team standings, less than 500 points ahead of hosts Boland. A similar margin separated fifth placed Eastern Province from Southern Cape while Southern KZN was seventh, Zululand eighth and the Academy squad finished ninth. The four-day event was extremely well run by the Boland Surfing Association, who were hosting a major national surfing tournament for the first time, and the organization and infrastructure drew praise from all involved. The surf at the Pipe on the Strand beachfront was good for the first three days and despite a stiff onshore breeze on the final day, it remained contestable. Jordy Smith, who added the u/18 boys crown to the u/16 title he won last year, was delighted with his victory, saying “I’m really stoked to come away with the win in my first year in the u/18’s and I’m looking forward to defending the title in my home surf (Durban) next year.” Under 14 boys’ winner Brendan Gibbens was equally elated by his first SA title, exclaiming, “I’m so stoked – I worked really hard for this and it finally paid off! The final was intense but I got off to a good start with a 6.5 point ride and established a lead, but I was worried that the others were doing better than that.” Tanika Hoffman, who claimed the u/14 crown with her last ride, commented, “There were nice waves for our final and Bianca (Buitendag) led the heat the whole way, but my last ride gave me the win – I’m really stoked!” The Sportsmanship Trophy which is awarded to a person who goes beyond the call of duty to assist others went to Clinton Gravett who stepped up to look after the Border team when the team management had to leave. The Best / Most Committed team award went to Zululand who never stopped trying and continued to support all their teammates. The judging panel adjudged Shaun Joubert to have produced the most exciting surfing at the event and the u/14 surfer from the Southern Cape received the Zigzag ‘Blowing Up’ award with it’s replica hand grenade trophy. Clinton Welfare, the O’Neill brand manager, thanked everyone involved for making the event such a success and commented on the high energy levels and support that the SA junior champs generate. He then committed the multi-national wetsuit and surfwear brand to another three years of sponsorship. The 2005 O'Neill SA Junior Championships featured more than 160 of the country’s top surfers 18 years of age and younger and was run for the first time by the Boland Surfing Association at the Strand.
