QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS’ FINALISTS PASS ANTI-DOPING TESTING
ISA Vice President and Doping Control Officer Maile Aguerre confirmed last Thursday that all tests are negative.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, NOVEMBER 7, 2005 (San Diego, CA) - The International Surfing Association (ISA) is pleased to confirm that the UCLA Analytical Laboratory at the UCLA School of Medicine reported no adverse findings in the results from the anti-doping tests administered to the top four finishers at the 2005 Quiksilver ISA WJSC in the Boys Under 16, Girls Under 18, and Boys Under 18 divisions.
The laboratory analyzed the urine specimens for the World Anti-Doping Administration (WADA) list of prohibited substances: anabolic and masking agents, diuretics, stimulants, narcotics, peptide hormones, cannabinoides and glucocorticosteroids. The specimens were also analyzed for tetrahydrogestrinone.
Testing was carried out according to ISA Anti-Doping Code (which is the same as the WADA code) without any problems.
Inspired by the Olympic spirit, the 2005 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships showcased athletes competing on behalf of their country. The top four finishers were awarded gold, silver, bronze and copper medals. Like in the Olympics, cultural identity, team spirit and moments of great personal triumph are hallmarks of the event.
28 countries participated in the week-long competition held October 8th through October 16th, including Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Tahiti, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela.
This Olympic doctrine of promoting international sportsmanship and peace through sport is the very culture of surfing; it is also the foundation of the mission of the ISA. The ISA Anti-Doping Program, in existence since 1992, seeks to preserve what is intrinsically valuable about sport. This value is often referred to as the “spirit of the sport”; it is the essence of true sportsmanship. It is how we play true.
The History of the World Junior Surfing Championships
The first World Junior Surfing Championships were held in 1980 as part of the ISA World Championships. That year Tom Curren was crowned champion in Biarritz, France. The event was held every other year until 2002 in Durban. In 2003, the World Junior Surfing Championships were held in Durban independently from the World Surfing Games, in order to provide a singular focus for world junior surfing. The following year, the contest was held in Papenoo, Tahiti as the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, the official name of the event.
The World Championships, also called World Surfing Games, date back to 1964, with the first event being held in Manly, Australia. Bernard "Midget" Farelly won the Open Men's division and Phyllis O'Donnel won in the Open Women's Division.
May 2006 will bring the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships to Maresias, Brazil hosted by CBS, the Brazilian Surfing Confederation.
The History of the ISA: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes the International Surfing Association (ISA) as the World Governing Authority for Surfing, Bodyboarding and Surfriding. It was originally founded as the International Surfing Federation in 1964 and has been running world championships since 1964, and the Junior World Championships since 1980.
ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of over 50 countries on six continents. Its headquarters are located in San Diego, California. It is presided by Fernando Aguerre, first elected in 1994 in Rio, and re-elected five times since. The ISA’s four Vice Presidents are from South Africa, Australia, Hawaii and the USA.
