ROXY PRO HAWAII WAITING PERIOD BEGINS TOMORROW MINUS BEACHLEY AND WOODS

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 November, 2005 : - - The Roxy Pro Hawaii, the second to last event on the 2005 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, will enter it’s 12-day waiting period at Haleiwa’s Ali'i Beach Park on Oahu's North Shore tomorrow, Saturday, 12 November. 

The event, in terms of its history and its bearing on the yet to be decided 2005 world title race is of obvious extreme importance plus it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of competitive women’s surfing.

Notably absent from the roster however will be former six-time world champion and long shot contender for the 2005 world title, Layne Beachley (AUS). Citing a herniated disc in her neck, Beachley has withdrawn from competition for the rest of the year and is currently exploring the possibility of surgery, an option that would likely waylay her for all of 2006 as well.

Having not surfed since her last heat at Malibu in September, Beachley would have needed two first place finishes, combined with the early elimination of top seeded surfers Sofia Mulanovich (PER) and Chelsea Georgeson (AUS), to win her seventh world title.

Former ASP Women’s World Tour competitor now injury alternate, Prue Jeffries (AUS), will replace Beachley in the upcoming Roxy Pro Hawaii and the final Billabong Pro Maui event.
 
Also out of commission for the duration of the 2005 season is tour rookie Rebecca Woods (AUS). Injuring her shoulder in Tahiti earlier this year, Woods is at liberty to let it heal thanks to her first-place finish and resulting requalification 0n the top tier tour for next year.

Replacing Woods will be former world number two, Pauline Menczer (AUS).

“I have pulled out of the final two events with the hope my shoulder will heal in time for next year’s first event, the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast,” Woods explained. “If I push it I could risk being out for another three years or at least compete at only 50 per cent capacity. I have to surf against the best girls in the world and it's hard to beat them at 100 per cent so I’m just not willing to do it. It might take a while but this is the best job in the world and I don’t want to lose it.”

In addition to the 17 women currently included in the Roxy Pro Hawaii draw, there will be one wildcard entrant to be added after a surf-off between hot up-and-coming Hawaiian surfers Carissa Moore, Bethany Hamilton, Chastity Baltazar, and last week's Roxy Trials winner Tory Titcomb takes place.

The Roxy Pro Hawaii is the first of three events that comprise the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing for the women. The other events include the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing Sunset Challenge, a specialty event with no bearing on the world title race, and the final WCT of the year, the Billabong Pro Maui.

Mañana empieza el período de espera del Roxy Pro Hawai

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 November, 2005 : - -  El Roxy Pro Hawai, el penúltimo evento del WCT Femenino del 2005, abrirá desde mañana 12 de Noviembre el período de 12 días de espera en Ali'i Beach Park, Haleiwa, en el North Shore de Oahu. Sofía Mulanovich afila sus quillas para conseguir su segunda corona mundial consecutiva. 

Este evento, por su relevancia histórica y por el hecho de que en él puede decidirse la carrera por el título del 2005 en favor de la peruana Sofía Mulanovich, ha atraído la atención de la prensa mundial, porque además este año se celebra en Haleiwa medio siglo de competencia femenina en la historia del surfing.

Resulta muy notable la ausencia de la australiana Layne Beachley, la 6 veces campeona del mundo y aspirante a la corona del 2005 quien, debido a una lesión en el cuello, ha decidido retirarse de las competencias por el resto del año. Beachley está considerando la opción de someterse a una cirugía que, prácticamente, la mantendría alejada del surfing competitivo durante la temporada del 2006.

A pesar del hecho de no haber podido correr olas desde su último heat en el Rip Curl Malibu Pro el pasado mes de Septiembre, Beachley hubiera podido obtener su séptimo título mundial si ganaba los dos últimos eventos, siempre y cuando la peruana Sofía Mulanovich como la australiana Chelsea Georgeson fueran eliminadas en las primeras instancias de los mismos.

La australiana Prue Jeffries, ex competidora del WCT Femenino, reemplazará a Layne Beachley tanto en el Roxy Pro Hawai como en el evento final, el Billabong Pro Maui a realizarse en Diciembre.
 
También fuera de carrera por el resto del 2005, se encuentra la debutante australiana Rebecca Woods, quien sufrió un desgarramiento de hombro corriendo en Teahupoo en Mayo de este año. Rebecca puede darse el lujo de abandonar las dos últimas fechas para curar su lesión gracias a que está primera en el WQS Femenino, lo cual le garantiza una entrada para el WCT Femenino del 2006.

Reemplazando a Rebecca Woods estará la ex  # 2 del mundo Pauline Menczer, también de Australia.

"He decidido retirarme de los dos eventos finales con la esperanza de que mi hombro pueda sanarse para el primer evento del 2006, el Roxy Pro del Gold Coast Australiano," explicó Woods. "Si someto mi hombro a demasiado esfuerzo, corro el riesgo de quedar fuera de competencia por lo menos tres años, o limitarme a competir solo al 50 por ciento de mi capacidad. Yo tengo que enfrentarme continuamente a las mejores tablistas del mundo utilizando el 100 por ciento de mi rendimiento, y aún así siempre resulta extremadamente difícil poder vencerlas, así que la decisión más acertada para mí consiste en tomarme un buen período de descanso curativo. Podrá tomarme un tiempo regresar al agua, pero ser una tablista profesional es el mejor trabajo que existe en el mundo y de ninguna manera quiero perderlo."

En adición a las 17 chicas que ya están oficialmente inscritas en el Roxy Pro Hawai, se abrirá una entrada del tipo Wildcard que será disputada entre Carissa Moore, Bethany Hamilton, Chastity Baltasar y Tory Titcomb, quien la semana pasada ganó los Roxy Trials.

El Roxy Pro es el primero de los tres eventos que forman parte del Van's Triple Crown of Surfing para mujeres.
