Lay-day called at Billabong World Junior Championships

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 03 anuary 2006: - - With the swell only dribbling in at North Narrabeen beach, Sydney, Australia today, Contest Director Luke Egan has opted to call a lay day today, Tuesday January 3 for the Billabong World Junior Championships. It is hoped that a predicted new swell will arrive tonight and tomorrow the event will swing back into action.

“We should be seeing a lift in swell for tomorrow,” said Egan. “The forecasters are picking that the swell will be solid too. Some are forecasting up to two metres (six feet) of swell.”

So far spectators have been treated to some outstanding surfing from the under 21 youngsters who throughout the event have been showing all the finesse of competitors who are much older and more experienced. The Billabong World Junior Championships are renowned for unearthing future superstars and a win here in either the men’s or women’s is a hugh kicks tart to an aspiring pro surfer’s career.

Yesterday Hawaiian 13-year-old Carissa Moore stunned one and all when she notched up the highest heat score of the day and is a perfect example of how the event introduces talent to the international mainstage. Moore will compete in the girl’s quarter finals when the event resumes.

The competitors in the event are made up from the seven ASP International regions including, South Africa, Asia, South America, North America, Europe, Hawaii and host region Australasia.

For the full results and draws for both men and women go to www.billabongpro.com or www.aspworldtour.com

Billabong and ASP will be hosting a full Live Webcast  of all the action from each day’s play.
