Heatdraw/Results
Australasian ASP Circuit opens with good waves and high scores in Victoria.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 January, 2006 : - - International surfers were the standouts at the Globe Jetty Surf Pro Junior held in good clean 1m surf today. USA/Californian surfer Alex Gray lead the international charge by scoring a massive round one victory and posting the days single highest wave score, an excellent 8.75 .
Fresh from an excellent result at the ASP Billabong World Junior Titles last week where he finished 5th place, Gray decided to come and check out Bells Beach and surf this event as part of his short stay in Australia - An always cheery and talkative Gray said after his win
" The opportunity to surf at Bells excited me so I figured I should come down after Sydney - I warmed up at Bells yesterday in some solid 6ft waves and even though today's smaller it's probably better because the winds are clean - Obviously I'd love to eventually get to the point where I return to Bells every Easter for the World Championship event but there's a long road of hard competition to get to that point but that's my aim over the coming few years! That heat was a good start for me and the waves are high performance today which is great."
Other internationals to impress today included Balinese surfer Made Garut, South African Rory Beach and highly rated Hawaiian Larson Granger who all easily progressed through to round two. Of the Australian surfers today, nineteen year old Cronulla surfer Dylan Hannah was easily the most impressive scoring two excellent 8 point rides to defeat Sth Africa's Brandon Roberts.
Hannah is not a well known surfer on the Pro Junior circuit and to date he has only competed sporadically on the circuit but today's performance clearly showed he's ready to get serious on what is widely regarded as the worlds best "breeding ground" for international professional surfers. Hannah's surfing was super fast and progressive and included an excellent aerial move to win through with the days highest heat scoring tally of 16.75.
Other Australian's to impress included Sunshine Coast surfers Chris Friend and Harrison Roach along with former Australian Junior champion Tim Wrench (Ulladulla NSW). Wrench would normally be a top seeded round three surfer at this event but his late entry has forced him back to the opening rounds - After his win he said
" I thought I put my entry in plenty early but I guess I didn't take into account busy Xmas and new year mail times so for this event I start from round one - It's important to try and start the year well and this event is the biggest as far as points go so hopefully I can do well - My aim this year is to finish in the top four on the ratings and qualify for the ASP World Professional Junior titles by the end of the year!"
Highly rated Gold Coast surfer Brent Dorrington (Coolangatta) was another top seeded surfer who must have put his entry in late and you can be sure he'll be early in future following his shock elimination in round one today. Dorrington appeared completely out of synch with the waves today and finished in last place in his heat with fellow Gold Coaster Chris Bennett progressing in second and young Sydney surfer Wylie Moyes winning.
Of the local surfers today Cahill Bell-Warren (Bells Beach) progressed through to round with a strong second placing. Not so fortunate were Troy Carollo (Jan Juc), Tyler Slaven (Jan Juc) and Josh Johnson - Baxter (Ocean Grove) who were all eliminated. Surfcoast surfers Tim Stevenson (Jan Juc), Tom Law (Jan Juc), James Healy (Airey's Inlet) and Finn Barry (Apollo Bay) are yet to surf and are all seeded into round three of this event and probably won't surf until around Thursday.
This years Globe Jetty Surf Pro Junior has attracted record entries and is the largest pro Junior event ever staged in Victoria with 300 entries across the Men's , Women's and Cadet Cup field. Round two heats began late today and each day through to next Sundays finals will see full days action at either Bells Beach or nearby Jan Juc beach depending on swell conditions.
