Promises of Great Waves coming sees a shortened day 3
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 January, 2006 : - - Australia's top female 20 years and under surfers along with the always enthusiastic group of elite under 16 "cadet" surfers braved the chilly small waves at Jan Juc for just a half day of competitive surfing . Organizers cut short the day and placed the highest seed womens and mens divisions on hold based on a fantastic swell forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bells Beach.
While conditions were very testing today there were a number of exceptional performances, particuarly by Bronte surfer Nicola Atherton who scored an exceptional 16.25 in her easy round 2 heat win over Cronulla's Eliza Roberts. Atherton last week had a career best result when she finished a close second place in the ASP Billabong World Pro Junior titles and she has brought that form with her to Victoria.
The other standout this morning was 15 year old Sth Coast NSW surfer Sally Fitzgibbons who continues to dominate her heats. The talented surfer from the little known coastal town of Gerroa recently won the Australian Cadet title in Tasmania and already seems destined for a busy season taking on the professional circuit at both pro junior and open WQS level.
The Globe Jetty Surf Cadet Cup for boys under 16 surfers ran through their round two heats today as well and standouts included Owen Wright, Sam Wrench (both NSW sth Coast), Tom Allen and Todd Rosewell (both Jan Juc), Sydney surfer David Vlug and South African invaders Chad Du Toit and Dale Staples.
David Vlug (Narrabeen, Nth Sydney) commented on his good form, winning through round two today by saying " The Cadet Cup is a big event for us because it really brings together the best of our age (under 16) from all over Australia and from around the world - It's probably the most pretigious event for us really young surfers and to win or make the final can be great for your career!"
Vlug has been impressive all week, progressing in the Pro Junior division as well and looks to have a lot of potential. Victorian surfers had a reasonable day today - Darci Egan won her round two heat early in the day but was finished third in her round three heat, narrowily, to be eliminated from the event. In the Cadet Cup Jan Juc surfers Tom Allen and Todd Rosewell were both impressive and progressed to round two.
The strong onshore winds made it hard for surfers this morning prompting event organizer Max Wells from Surfing Victoria to postpone the afternoon heats and look ahead to some expected excellent surf in the coming days.
"Everything indicates some real quality waves are coming our way and with this event being so important we'll try and get the best of the surf over the coming days - we're expecting clean small waves at Jan Juc tomorrow and then Friday through to Sunday looks like being fantastic at Bells Beach - With the highest seeds set to surf in great waves it could be one of the best ever Globe Jetty Surf Pro's !"
Everyone will be back at Jan Juc beach tomorrow morning at 7am for the events recommencment!
