Big Waves at Bells challenge and exhilorate Surfers - One Gold Coast surfer battles serioius rip for 20 min!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 January, 2006 : - - Bells Beach provided some of the biggest and best surf for Australasia's very best 20 year and under surfers that they've ever had to face. A large swell filtered into the famous bay overnight providing early morning waves in the 2 to 3m (8 to 10 feet) range and while the experience for most was exhilarating , for some it was quite daunting!

Some sensational performances today with round four of the Male division being completed along with the girls final. While waves were generally in the 2m range, some "bomb " sets came through the bay during the morning well in the 3m range to test the ocean skills of all the competitors!

Typically high scoring wins were posted by Ben Dunn, Laurie Towner, Matt Wilkinson and Heath Joske - all Northern NSW surfers along with Queensland Sunshine Coast surfers Julian Wilson (Coolum) and Dean Brady (Noosa). All are experienced Pro Junior surfers who relished the conditions and were excited about maintaining their run into tomorrows finals day -

Ben Dunn (Taree) after his win commented "I love Bells when it has size, it gives you a wave face to really work on and you there's no excuse for not scoring big when the waves are like this!"

Julian Wilson (Coolum Sunshine Coast) attacked some of the days largest sets  and said - " Fantastic to get some challenging waves for our event - we have to surf a lot of small and medium surf during our tour but you need to be able to surf all conditions and I think most of us like it like this!"

Not so impressed by the conditions today was Coolangatta surfer Michael Levitt who's leg rope snapped late in the heat and he was forced to swim through a large and seriously strong rip for 20 minutes before making it to shore. Levitt was eliminated from the heat as well and exhausted on the beach after his ordeal said - " That was hard work, I was caught in the channel and hit by some of the larger sets and no matter how hard you swim you can't get through the rip - I took in a lot of water which didn't help -- There was no panic, I basically had to maintain position and eventually I found a break in the swells and made it to shore - serious conditions!"

For most of the girls in today's finals it was the biggest surf they had ever experienced in or outside of competition - With an experienced Surfing Victoria lifeguard accompanying the girls in the water for back up assistance, the girls took on the waves and handled the conditions superbly!

Young 15 year old New Zealand sensation Arinni Mason (Now based in Coolangatta but still calls Gisborne NZ home) took an exciting win ahead of Northern NSW surfer Jessica Hickson. After her win Mason said - "I love big waves, the bigger the better for me - I grew up surfing big waves in NZ and was comfortable out there for sure. The win is great for me - a perfect start to the season and I really hope to win this seasons Pro Junior circuit!

Not a great day for Victorian surfers who were hoping to have an edge on their comppetitors at Bells on a large day - All four Victorian representatives were eliminated - Best performance was from Torquays Amy Stewart who finished 7th place in the girls division.

Tomorrow will see the 20 and under boys final run and conditions are expected to again be excellent!
