BYRON BAY CLEANS-UP AT THE CLEAN WATER

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 January, 2006 : - - Northern NSW Club Byron Bay Boardriders dominated more fancied Queensland boardriding clubs to win the Gold Coast City Council Clean Water Teams Challenge. The Byron team won by eight points from nearest rivals Coolum Boardriders. The raiders from south of the border took home $3,000.00 for their win, and became the ninth club to claim the title, the first NSW club to win the event. North Stradbroke Island club Point Lookout placed 3rd, and Kirra Surfriders 4th.

Byron Bay took the lead from the first surfer to hit the water, Beau Walker scoring a 5.67, and then Jarred Sullivan and Yerin Brown followed the good start, both scoring 7.5’s from the judges, and giving the Byron boys an almost unassailable lead. Coolum came back strongly with a 6.5 wave from standout performer Dave Reardon-Smith, as did Point Lookout with a strong effort from Bede Durbidge, but it was not enough to reel in the Bryon Bay team who were firing on all cylinders. The Kirra team had a luckless final after scoring the highest heat points of any team in their semi-final but they could not repeat the effort in the final, settling for 4th place.

Bede Durbidge was the standout surfer of the event scoring not one but two 9.67 waves in two separate heats. The event was held in ½ to 1 metre fun peaks at Burleigh Heads, with clean water and blue skies, not even a shark moving through the contest area could deter the surfers from putting in a top-notch performance.

Four times winners North End Boardriders were eliminated in the semi-finals by Kirra and Point Lookout, putting and end to their three in a row winning streak. Snapper Rocks Surfriders were also another shock elimination, knocked-out in a super-tight first round heat.

Coolum Boardriders now lead the QCSS ratings, with Point Lookout 2nd, and Kirra 3rd, only Queensland Clubs being eligible to win the series. The next event in the QCSS will be the Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge, with Kirra as the possible venue on the 24th to the 26th February.
