Peru hosting the 2006 Reef Pan-American Surfing Games

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 January, 2006 : - - Peru will host the Pan-American Surfing Games in 2006, The continent-wide competition will take place in the Punta Rocas resort, on the coast near the capital Lima, from Tuesday next week to the following Sunday.

Athletes from 16 countries will take part. Peru will send to the contest Gabriel Swayne, Pan American champion and Gabriel Villaran, Latin American champion. The women's events will feature Anali Gomez, the Brissa sisters and Karen Zapata. The world champion, Sofia Mulanovich, will not take part because of previous committments.

The Pan-American Surf Association is constituted by 22 countries, and gets together every 2 years to run the Olympic format team event. Due to the number of  participants, the event takes an entire week in 2 different stages, which means 2 contests at the same time.

Peru has been selected by the Pan-American Surf association to host the VII edition of the “PAN AMERICAN SURFING GAMES”. The countries that have confirmed their assistance are: Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Peru as the host.

Every country participates with a team composed of 15 athletes, 2 judges, 1 team manager, 1 coach, 1 assistant and 1 translator (if necessary). The titles will be disputed in the following divisions: Men Open, Junior, Women Open, Long board, Bodyboard Men Open, Bodyboard Women Open.

Due to the Olympic format of this event, the athletes compete to earn points for their respective countries. At the end of the event, individual and team medals are awarded. The “Pan-American Champion” award is given to the team who reaches the highest score by adding the points earned by each one of his competitors.
