Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 January, 2006 : - - A great show of our continent's best surfers took place today at Punta Rocas, where the first day of the Reef Pan-American Surfing Games, Motorola Cup was held. On two different podiums the Junior and Open division first round, and bodyboard first and second round went in the water.
Great six feet waves break on Punta Rocas main break, with perfectly long waves, that forced the surfers to be prepared to take the right waves and make the right approach in each wave, cause the long paddle to the outside took a lot of time and and physical effort. Two kilometers south, on the second podium, Bodyboard division was held in three foot heavy surf.
The Open division was dominated by Peru´s excellent surfer, Gabriel Villaran that showed some solid surfing and made clean lines and defended the home honorably, beating Costa Rica's Federico Pilurzu, Luis Iturria from Uruguay and Abner Rivera from Guatemala. The Peruvian took two great waves, from the point to the shore, making lots of cutbacks, snaps and off the lips, adding 13,84 to his score. Once he got out of the water que commented: “I felt really well, cause my board is working really good, I picked up some good waves, which is really important here at Punta Rocas and the fact that I am at home is really important. That´s what I felt, so I took some good waves and rode them as I wanted.”
Speaking about his team chances, Villaran said: “We are pretty solid, we have a god team, the only thing missing is Sofi –Mulanovich-, that is not going to be able to compete. We´re all feeling great, and all of my team mates know this wave a lot so we are surely going to be on the first spots of the raring”.
On the following heat, local star, Javier Swayne was sent to the repercharge, after he lost to Jason Torres from Costa and Wilver Albarenga from El Salvador . Swayne wasn´t able to find the right waves, so he will have his fight against on the loosers round, along wih two other team mates: Cesar Bauer and Olenka Castro of the Bodyboard division, they are the only Peruvians that lost their heats.
The highest combined score of the day was made by Brazilian Junior star Jadson André, who made an amazing show of great backside maneuvers in the heavy part of the wave. On his best waves –also, best ride of the day -, the Brazilian made an amazing off the lip in a heavy six feet wave and kept doing some nice turns all along an entire classic Punta Rocas waves, receiving an 8.33.
The other team that came here to make a great show was Guadalupe, they only have one surfer in the repercharge: Eric Coulon. Guadalupe´s star, , Arthur Bourbon, was made some high scoring ride showing some solid surfin. “I felt really well, the waves were amazing and luckily I could get the eaves I needed.”

I was feelog confident cause today morning I did some great maneuvers, I was lucky enough to find my two waves ”.
Brazil was todaty´s only team that didn´t lost a heat. There is still a long way to til the end of the Games.
