2006 ISA Aloha Cup

British, Namibian and South African Teams start arriving in Cape Town for the ISA Aloha Cup
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 January, 2006 : - - The first members of the British Surfing Team who will take on South Africa and Namibia in an ISA Aloha Cup clash in Cape Town on January 28 and 29 have arrived in the Peninsula. Nathanial Hooton and Darren Wright will be joined by their teammates Luke Jennaway, Josh Knowles and Kari Knutsen Rees and the 10 strong Longboard contingent of Ben Byfield, Catherine Meredith, Adrian and Jo Howell, Candice O'Donnell, Gary Woodward, Ben Howey, OJ Freshwater, Ben Howarth and Cullum Clark on Saturday January 21.
During their 10 day visit to South Africa the British surfers and longboarders will not only have a chance to sample some of the Cape Peninsula conditions but will also spend four days surfing Jeffrey's Bay before returning to Cape Town at the end of the month for the Aloha Cup. The British Team will be coached by Level 3 SSA Coach Etienne Venter
Namibian surfers Dirk Redman, Torsten Gossow, Wynand Labushagne and Heidi Currie are already in Cape Town preparing for the event while Anko de Wet,Ben Alfheim and team Manager Hardy Hofmeister will arrive on January 23.The Namibians will be coached by Dagan Gold of Kommetjie who is also a Level 3 Coach.
The South African Under 23 surfing team will fly in from all corners of South Africa on Thursday January 26 in time for some practice in the icy Cape surf while most of the Puma SA Longboard team, made up predominantly of surfers from the Western and Eastern Cape, are in the city already.
The team top seed is Matt Kruger of Durban who won the WP Open in March last year, with 2005 O'Neill Cold Water Classic winner Ryan Payne second seed. Ryan's brother Shaun is the youngest surfer in the side 2005 WP Open champion Josh Salie of Kommetjie gets his first call up to National duty, former National Junior team captain Dylan Stone and fellow Port Elizabeth surfer Granville West are also in the side along with 2005 National junior team member Lungani Memani of Port Alfred and former National Development team member Raoul Erasmus of Mossel Bay.
Stacey Guy of Melkbosstrand, the 2005 WP Champion heads up the Women's group of Laetitia Lee of Jeffrey's Bay and Nicole Annells of Warner Beach. Former World surfing champion Ant Brodowicz of Margate is head coach, Mikhail Thompson of Somerset West is his assistant and Pax Nydoo of Durban is the manager of the Lotto SA team .
All the teams as well as the contest officials, guests of Surfing South Africa and representatives of the media will get together at the famous Brass Bell restaurant in Kalk Bay around 19h00 on Friday January 27 for an opening function and official welcome. The ISA Aloha Cup "double header" will take place at the best venues in the Peninsula on Saturday and Sunday January 28 and 29. competition.
The ISA Aloha Cup is supported by a grant from the Lotto. The tournament uses a unique format which involves all the athletes in both individual and team competition and the overall winners are the team which has the highest number of individual and team points after both legs. The venue will be available from the WP Info line at 0822334001 on January 28 and 29 after 07h30 on each day of competition.
The International Surfing Association (ISA) is the World's governing body for surfing and Surfing South Africa is recognized by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as the governing body for the sport in South Africa.
