Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 January, 2006 : - - All the competitors still remaining in the contest went into the water today, making the most exciting competition day of the entire contest. The surfers defended their flags and gave a good fight for the biggest title of our continent: the Panamerican Surfing Champion.
Waves at Punta Rocas diminished a little bit but anyway, well shaped 3 to 4 feet waves assured the third consecutive day of the best of Latin America Surfing. All the the surfers from all the divisions, repercharge and main event, went to the water.
On today first heat, the local hero and 2005 Latin America Surfing Champion, Gabriel Villaran, lost in a close heat that was won by Federico Pilurzu from Costa Rica and Sebastián Alarcón de Peru. Now, Villaran will have to face the repercharge.
Later, on the Open Men's division fourth round, Sebastián Alarcón did an interference on Guadeloupe's Fred Amoux and also went to the to the losers round. The situation got better for the locals when the Defending Champ, Gabriel Aramburu, turned the situation of his heat, on the last ten minutes, coming from fourth to second, right after he took a good left that was filled with frontside maneuvers that worth 7,9.

“I was more nervous than ever, the Brazilian–Caetano Vargas-, who I think is still a junior, was ripping. I waited for my good wave for a long time and it finally came. I was lucky to get that score. Right after that I took another one that I surfed to the shore. I am very happy; qualified for Main Event Final. I like to take things, heat by heat. It would be amazing to repeat the victory”, declared a happy Aramburu.
Speaking about the lost of her fellow country men he said: “I am calm about that cause they are still con competition, they are on the repercharge. That time that I won this contest –Equator, 2003-, I lost in my first heat and did it all the way to the final, on the repercharge. They all have good chances, so I hope to find them on my way.”
The situation got better for the locals when Longboard and Ladies heat went to the water. Once again, Peruvians got the first place on their heats. Longboarders Roberto Meza and Felipe Becerra and Analí Gomez along with Brissa Malaga are now on the Main Event final of their respective divisions. Becerra surfed the highest single scoring ride of the event, he executed several off the lip, Roundhouse Cutbacks and Hang Fives, receiving a 9,17, that he backed up with another great ride that gave him the highest combined score of his division -15,84-.
Costa Rican Federico Pilurzu, got to the Main Event final on the Open Men and Longboard division. He defeated Gabriel Aramburu and Brazilian Caetano Vargas. Pilurzu showed himself pretty self secured, risking some great backhand maneuvers attacking some heavy waves and he ended well rewarded.
