Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 January, 2006 : - - It was elimination day at the Panamerican Reef Surfing Games, Presented by Motorola. All the countries still on competition had some of their athletes eliminated. The repercharge rounds of the six categories went to the water. Brazil , Guadalupe, and Peru are the favorites, but Costa Rica´s results, give hope for the ticos country, fighting for a place among the medalist on the team placing career.
Fog covered the waves at Punta Rocas, which forced the event to be moved to San Bartolo´s Segundo Muelle. Where the judges could see the surf over the pier. The waves were over two feet breaking near the judges. Three Round Three Junior and Open heats went to the water there. Then, the Contest Director, Karin Sierralta was informed that the fog moved out of Punta Rocas, so the event was resumed at the main site, where the waves were way bigger, with six-feet perfect surf. All the repercharge heats were held there.
It was a long day for the Open and Junior surfers, some of them going to the water three times, like Panama´s local hero Gary Saavedra that went to the water three times, winning, and assuring himself a place among America´s top eight surfers, after he beat Brazilian Bruno Galini –second – and local hero Javier Swayne.
Gary said after he came out of the water: “I am tired, three heats in a day, but I felt comfortable I didn´t got so many good waves, but I was able to make some maneuvers; I started with a regular wave and I got a little one that I filled with maneuvers to the shore, that gave me the points. Now we are close to the finals, and I would love to repeat my position –Runner Up- on the last Panamericans.
Luis Iturria from Uruguay is the only surfer coming from repercharge round one that is still on competition, reaching comp final day, already placing himself among America´s top eight surfers.
The Peruvian, 2005 Latin America Surfing Champion, Gabriel Villaran, went through his two repercharge heats he entered. On his last he almost doesn´t advance, until the last seven minutes, when Villaran got two good lefts that let him go from third to first.
On the Junior division, Manuel Selman, 2005 Junior Latin America Surfing Champion, from Chile was the schocking today´s elimination, cause he couldn´t win agains Brazilian Jadson André and Jean Ettiene from Guadalupe.
Another surprise was the elimination of the local hero, Javier Swayne, that didn´t got through against Gary Saavedra and Bruno Galini.
The local team had a major number of eliminations on the Junior division, witj all his four athletes losing their heats. Cristóbal de Col, Piero Delucchi, Guillermo González and Edson Padilla lost their repercharge heats.
Brazil still have their junior athletes on competition. While Costa Rica have three out of four.
On the ladies side, Costa Rica's Lisbeth Vindas, got her ticket to the repercharge final today, with a great backhand approach, receiving 11,10 to beat Marina Werneck from Brazil –second -, Sofía Borquez from Chile, and Samanta Alonso from Panama.
The event highest combined score was made today on the second podium by Brazil´s bodyboarder Erisberto Abrantes, who made 18 points on his heat.
Final day of competition will start tomorrow at 8:00 AM. The champions of all the divisions will be defined, and also the winning country.
