Boland earn a narrow victory over Western Province, Great Britain third in friendly Cape Surf challenge
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 January, 2006 : - - Boland earn narrow win over Western Province, visitors Great Britain end third at Long Beach. The Cobian Boland surfing team started 2006 in style Sunday (January 22) when they beat neighbours Western Province by one point in the Cape surf Challenge in 2 to 3 foot surf at Long Beach Kommetjie.
The visiting British surfers, who only arrived on the afternoon before the contest, found the going tough and had to settle for third. Boland edged ahead of WP in the individual heats and needed to finish second or better in the tag team contest to win the event overall.
Although the Western Province team pulled out all the stops and blitzed the tag team heat, the British surfers battled to find their rhythm and never looked like coming anywhere but third.
This left Boland to finish second behind WP in the tag event which was good enough to give them a one point victory over their more powerful neighbours.
The Cape Surf Challenge was held as a warm up event for the visiting British team who have traveled up the Garden Route to Jeffrey's Bay this week. They will return to Cape Town on Thursday for the ISA Aloha Cup which is scheduled to take place at the weekend, January 28 and 29.
The ISA Aloha Cup will feature the British and teams from South Africa and Namibia and will include the first ever South African Longboard International involving the Puma South African Longboard Team and a group of longboarders from Britain.
The Aloha Cup is sanctioned by the International Surfing Association, presented and hosted by Surfing South Africa with logistical support from Western Province Surfing and is supported by the Lotto.
All the teams as well as the contest officials, invited guests of Surfing South Africa and representatives of the media will get together at the famous Brass Bell restaurant in Kalk Bay at19h00 on Friday January 27 for an opening function and official welcome.
