Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 January, 2006 : - - Australia day turned the waves back on for a restart of the Brothers Neilsen Pro Junior, with round three, swinging into action as the top seeded surfers hooked into a new building Burleigh swell.
Surfing hit new heights today as round two surfers were matched up against the top junior seeded surfers putting it all on the line, on the long winding 1m walls with some impressive aerial surfing going down. With $1,000 up for grabs for the most innovative move performed on the day, competitors pushed the limits, surfing beyond the already high standard expected of these junior future surf stars.
Sunshine Coast’s Julian Wilson was a definite standout today when he blew away the judges, and the many Australia Day spectators who lined the hillside, enjoying the surfing action. An added bonus on an already perfect summers day.
Wilson was surfing loose on his first few waves which were impressive enough, but then he hit the straps when he picked up a set wave, busting the fins out on each turn and throwing in some radical tail slide moves, scoring an 8.17 out of a possible 10. That would have been enough for anyone, But Wilson wasn’t finished yet. His very next wave saw him again, pushing his board beyond its limits, busting the tail into the air, as he flew down the line.
One move in particular went into orbit, pulling off an incredibly high, rail grab aerial, only to land tail first in the critical part of the wave and making it. With a 9.60 awarded for such a risky, on edge maneuver, Wilson claimed the $1,000 “Innovative move” prize and locked in the highest score of the day.
Other local standouts were Adam Bennetts, of main beach, who gave Wilson a run for his money getting the ride of his life when he dropped deep into a set wave, launching into an exceptionally long roof-line floater, then falling literally into a barrel only to emerge down the point wrapping the wave up with an couple of solid top turns. Scoring a 9.57, only .03 shy of Wilson's wave of the day.
Palm Beaches Rubin levet also surfed exceptionally well when he took out a stacked heat, the only local up against NSW's best, with Owen Wright second, Brett Burcher third and Brent Power fourth.
Another stacked heat saw an all Queensland field, up against lone South African surfer Keegan Nel. Dean Iezzi (Sunshine Beach) was on fire and ripped the Burleigh walls to pieces, stepping up to defeat his local hero Wade Goodall (The Passion Pop king), both advanced to the next round, nudging out Nel and Shane Felsinger.
Top over seas surfers to advance to round 4 were, Tahitian tearer Tumata Puhetini, Japan's Tatsuya Fukagawa, South African Brett Shearer and Reunion Island ripper Damien Chaudoy.
With the contestable 1m conditions expected to continue over the next couple of days the surfing is sure to be impressive, with the quarters, semi’s and finals wrapping up on Saturday. The “Brothers Neilsen Pro Jnr” is a mobile event. Based at Burleigh but with the option of chasing the best waves on the day giving the amped junior field a chance to unleash their furious fast paced surfing action in a quest to make their mark on the world professional junior surfing scene.

This new daily prize is desigened to push competitors to new heights and nudging the standard of junior surfing to new levels. That’s an additional $500 on offer, on each day of competition.
