Oustnading action takes Brothers Neilsen Pro Junior to the quarter finals
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 January, 2006 : - - The future of surfing is certainly in good hands as the world’s best junior surfers showed a glimpse of where this sport is heading as competitors went ballistic on the long winding 1m Burleigh walls.
Day four saw a mass elimination of the remaining international competitors as the competition stepped up a pace, with lone South African Brandon Jackson the only overseas surfer to survive the round four barrage of local and interstate surfers.
Jackson making sure he didn’t fall the way of his traveling counterparts in the earlier heats chalked up a convincing win in heat 11, locking in a 6.50 on his opening ride, then backing that up with an 8.40 to take out the heat over Michael Spencer who placed second. Both through to the round of 24.
The most dramatic elimination came in heat one though when Japan’s Hideyoshi Tanaka threw all caution to the wind, launching himself into an impressive aerial assault, only to land in the mine shaft as the wave closed in on itself, coming up with a snapped board and a quick flash back to yesterday when he attempted the same move, spearing his hand with the nose of the board.
Tanaka’s manager Mr. Yama, madly scuffled over the slippery Burleigh rocks clutching a spare board and throwing it out into the rock-break lineup. With valuable time lost Tanaka frantically raced back to the takeoff point desperate to make up time. But caught up in the moment Tanaka mistakenly bumped into Shaun Stevic on a take off, inflicting a paddle interference on himself and a certain exit from the event.
Also bowing out in that heat was star performer of the event, Tahitian Taumata Puhetini who until that point was looking a real threat to take out the event.
Julian Wilson (Coolum) continued his impressive run, once again racking up the highest point scores of the day. Wilson constantly pushed his board to new heights displaying the form that earned him the “Most innovative” move of the day, bagging himself a jackpotted $1,000 yesterday, it was looking as if he was going to jag another $500 today when he pulled off another amazing tail slide aerial reverse. But just as he was about to announce that he was going to donate the dollars to the Gold Coast Children’s hospital, Sunshine Coasts Mitch Coleborn busted out a more impressive backhand air reverse, landing the board tail first, then to everyone’s amazement recovering through the closeout whitewash.
Other standouts today were Reuben Levitt (Palm Beach) Heath Joske (Vallla Beach) James Wood (NSW) Ben Dunn and Beau Atchison, All winning their round six heats and advancing into tomorrows round of 12 and a chance at taking out this years Brothers Neilsen Pro Junior.
With Conditions expected to hold, organizers are hoping to wrap up the event at Burleigh point on Saturday with the finals expected to hit the water around 1pm.
The “Brothers Neilsen Pro Jnr” is a mobile event. Based at Burleigh but with the option of chasing the best waves on the day giving the amped junior field a chance to unleash their furious fast paced surfing action in a quest to make their mark on the world professional junior surfing scene.
