South Africa dominates first rounds of ISA Aloha Cup at Misty Cliffs in Cape Town
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 January, 2006 : - - Small surf at the more traditional Cape surf spots and marginal early morning conditions forced a delay of three hours on Day One of the ISA Aloha Cup as contest officials struggled to find a venue for the first rounds of the ISA sanctioned event but the predicted South Easter backed off and contest officials took the event to Misty Cliffs, a surf spot situated between the villages of Kommetjie and Scarborough in the Southern Peninsula..
Misty Cliffs proved to be an inspired choice as the wind stayed away all day giving the South Africans, British and Namibian waveriders a chance to showcase their skills in perfect Cape conditions and acceptable 2 to 3 foot surf.
South Africans dominated the first rounds in both the Aloha Cup, which featured shortboard surfers as well as in the International Longboard contest, and were outstanding in the Aloha Cup and Longboard Team events respectively. Every heat in the Aloha Cup was won by a South African while in the Longboard International, all the wins except one went to locals.
Matthew Kruger, Ryan Payne, Dylan Stone and Stacey Guy gave top class performances to put South Africa well ahead of great Britain and Namibia after the first round of individual competition and then turned up the heat to nail another first place in the ISA Team contest.
In the Men's Longboard rounds local boy Matthew Moir proved why he is ranked third in the World when he beat team mate Dylan Mc Cleod into second place. Michael Grendon went on to beat fellow Cape Town longboarder in their semi final and the two of them will meat Moir and Mc Cleod in the Final.
In the Junior Longboard division Kwezi Quika showed his class in beating his friend and WP teammate into second place and the two of them will meet up with second semi winner Ben Howey of Great Britain and Justin Bing. The women's heat was won by SA Champion Simone Robb from teammates Michelle Hill and Tara Hosssack and Candice O'Donnell of Great Britain was fourth.
The Veterans heat win went the way of former WP surfer Andrew Lenton with Hans Kamhoot and fellow South African Donald Paarman second and third respectively. Adrian Howell of Great Britain was fourth. In the Longboard ISA Team event South Africa A finished ahead of South Africa B, Great Britain A and Great Britain B.
The ISA Team event for the shortboarders saw South Africa finish ahead of Great Britain and Namibia. Sunday is the final day of competition in this unique ISA event which features both surfing and longboarding. In the Aloha Cup,the format involves all the athletes in the three teams over the two days and the overall winners are the team which score the highest number of points after both legs.
The International longboard competition will include individual finals and a two leg ISA team event will determine the overall winners.
The ISA Aloha Cup is supported by a grant from the Lotto. The tournament uses a unique format which involves all the athletes in both individual and team competition and the overall winners are the team which has the highest number of individual and team points after both legs.
