    Quiksilver King Of The Groms
    Presented by Peugeot and Samsung

    South Africa Junior Series 2006.
Cape Town, East London & Durban North Coast
    March - June 2006

Quiksilver King Of The Groms South Africa kicks off in March

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 February, 2006 : - - This year sees the launch of the hottest new junior series on our shores, the Quiksilver King Of The Groms presented by Peugeot and Samsung. This three part series, with events in Cape Town, East London and Durban North Coast, has only two divisions, and a nice big pile of cash and prizes for the winners.

As well as this, the series offers the unheard of possibility of a 15-year-old grom getting into a WCT event through the trials. The end result could, in theory, see that grom winning such an event. Pretty sick hey? Only two divisions, U15 and U20. The winner of the U15 series receives an all expenses paid trip to the grand finals in France and an opportunity to become The King of The Groms.

The King will then be awarded a guaranteed trials slot into three of the world’s biggest WCTs  - the Quiksilver Pro France, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and the Quiksilver Pro Japan. That grom will thus receive a rare chance to achieve a major result in a WCT event, to compete against a Slater, or a Logie. The winner of the U20 division, which is ASP- sanctioned, receives a return trip to Hawaii. There’s also a total prize pool of R84500.

    Who is eligible?
Well, the grom series is U15, which means you have to be 15 years old throughout 2006 in order to compete. The U20 division works on the same principles. Both divisions are Surfing South Africa-sanctioned, and the U20 is ASP-sanctioned. At this stage it’s only open to the boys.

The events are going to be covered on Boardriders TV, which is set for extensive broadcast time on Supersport. Boardriders TV have already committed to covering the events in their entirety, thus giving them loads of valuable airtime. Enter an event, then see yourself busting on TV a few weeks later.

Quiksilver South Africa head honcho Barry Wolins reckons, “We are so stoked to be putting this junior series on. It’s an insane chance for the groms to jump a few spaces in the competitive surfing hierarchy, as well as an opportunity for them to get some more competitive experience against their peers. The groms also get the chance to win some real prizemoney along the way for a change”.

Dane Patterson, Quiksilver’s head of marketing, was equally as enthusiastic.  “We at Quiksilver have decided to deliver this unreal new concept to the South African junior surfers as we feel that the groms these days are pushing it to the limit and stepping up to the plate. What we aim to do is give the juniors a stepping-stone to enable them to compete, travel, and in turn get on the elite international stage and prove themselves. Mobile venues will also make for better, more contestable conditions.”

    Contest dates and locations.

Event 1 - 4th/5th March – Cape Town. Mobile venue
Event 2 - 8th/9th April – East London. Mobile venue
    Event 3 - 3rd/4th June – Ballito – mobile venue.

In order to enter, groms must download the entry form from www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za , complete it, deposit the entry fee, and fax the entry form and deposit slip to 0866166988.

Contact Surfing South Africa on surfingsouthafrica@gmail.com or on either 021 6742972 or 0824541149 during office hours for more info. The Quiksilver King Of The Groms events are mobile, so to find out the venues of each event ph 0728875972 after 07h30 on the days of the respective events, Surfing South Africa sanctions the events and the U20 division is ASP Africa rated – points will go towards the year end ASP Africa Pro Junior Ratings.
