SNAPPER ROCKS DOMINATION AT JIM BEAM SURFTAG
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 February, 2006 : - - Snapper Rocks Surfriders dominated the final of the the Queensland round of the Jim Beam National Surftag, winning the final by more than 20 points.
Held in metre and a half solid peaks at Duranbah Beach (the second home break for Snapper surfers) Snapper took control of the final from the third surfer to hit the water to win their second consecutive Queensland Jim Beam Surf tag title, and picking up the $1,000.00 first prize. At the end of the day’s competition, Snapper, Noosa, Alley, and Kirra clubs made it to the Queensland final and into the National Jim Beam Surftag finals to held at Curl Curl (Sydney) on March 10/11.
Noosa Boardriders took the lead early with Lee Wilson scoring 20.5 points for his team, and Corey Ziems giving second place to Kirra with a total of 16.5 points. The Alley then threatened with Samba Mann scoring 27 points for his teamtaking the lead, before Jay Phillips started the roll for Snapper scoring 20.5 points, backed up by Shaun Gossman with a total of 17.5.
The turning point of the final was when Queensland Champion Damon Harvey entered the water for Snapper, racking up the highest power wave of the event (8.5) and an impressive total of 28.5 points for his 3 waves to thrust Snapper into an almost unbeatable position. Snapper’s final surfer Luke Dorrington sealed the deal for his club, scoring an impressive 21 points delivering Snapper the win.
Noosa surfers put up valiant effort, even Daniel Vardy’s 21 points and Shannon Neils 26 points not enough to haul back Snapper’s massive lead. Snapper scored an impressive total of 108.5 points, Noosa the next closest club with a total of 87 points. Alley boardriders were 3rd on 81.8, and Kirra Surfriders 4th with 77.5.
After this weekend’s performance Snapper must go into the National Final as favourites, hoping to win their second National Jim Beam Surftag Title in 3 years, last winning in 2003.
