    BYRON BAY SCORE TEAMS CHALLENGE WIN IN FINAL SECONDS

    Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 February, 2006 : - - The result came down to the very last heat of 76 surfed over 3 days. Noosa, Coolum and Byron all were riding on the performance of Yerin Brown, Byron Bay’s last surfer needing a win to send the result to a three way countback between the clubs. Not only did Brown have to win, but had to win with a total of more than 15 points. This was after both Noosa and Coolum had the chance to seal victory in prior heats, Mitch Semple’s (Coolum) second place and Ryan Campbell’s third place seeing the two clubs tied on points leading into the last few heats. 

    With 10 seconds remaining and Brown leading the heat but with a total of 13 points. Brown took off, pulled a huge floater then a deep tube to escape and finishing with a closeout re-entry to score 9.0 for the ride and winning the title, as the clock wound down to zero. Noosa placed second on countback to Coolum third, and Mereweather fourth. 

    This was the third win in the events history for Byron, and the club and supporters were stoked. 320 surfers from 40 clubs took part over the three days of competition, surfers travelling from New Zealand, NSW, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia to be a part of World’s largest grassroots surfing teams challenge. 

    Solid 2 metre barrelling peaks were on offer at Duranbah Beach on the QLD/NSW Border, and surfers revelled in the tubes on offer. The  performance of the day went to the Alley’s Luke Munro scoring a 9.17, 9.57, and a 9.77 in succession to dominate his heat.

    Each club fielded a team of eight surfers, two of whom must be juniors, with each surfer representing his club contesting a four man heat. Each of the 300-plus surfers representing their respective clubs surfed just once before barracking for his team mates over an exhaustive schedule that continued over the 3 days. The presentation held at Kirra Sports Club at 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
