SWELL RISES TO GREET QUIKSILVER PRO TRIALISTS  -   

Late News Flash -- Quiksilver Pro Trials are being live webcast Monday  

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 February, 2006 : - - Anticipation for the beginning of both the Quiksilver Pro (men) and the Roxy Pro (women), being staged on Queensland, Australia’s Gold Coast, is at an all time high as swell forecasts indicate that conditions will see waves reach well above head height over the next few days.

The Quiksilver and the Roxy Pro events are the first on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour and the ASP Women’s World Tour schedule and given the “down to the wire” finishes on both tours last season all are anticipating the standard of both tours to reach unprecedented heights in 2006.

“The swell has built throughout the day today and will continue to hold through to tomorrow,” said ASP President and avid weather watcher Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew. “Tomorrow we should see waves of around 1.5 to two metres (five to six foot) and it is predicted that the wind will also be favourable early on. The trialists are really going to have some quality waves.”

The Quiksilver Pro Trials for the men will begin tomorrow morning from 7am local time and competitors will be battling it out with the hope of claiming the final slot in the draw for the main event. Apart from the regular 45 contestants who compete on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, two wildcards plus the winner of the trials complete the 48 man lineup.

The two wildcards have been given to exciting up-and-comers Jeremy Flores (REU) and Luke Munro (AUS).

A strong combination of easterly groundswell and tradewind swell has delivered excellent waves across the Qld coastline this week, with size hovering in the 4-5’ range for most of Thursday and Friday. Although S/SE winds have bumped up the open beachbreaks during the daytime, this wind direction has been ideal for the points. Fortunately, both the short and long term surf outlook for Qld is very positive and we can expect similar swell conditions to persist throughout the forecast period.

Tropical Depression 13F moved slowly southeast from its original position WNW of Fiji on Wednesday, and although it is unlikely to develop into a Tropical Cyclone (due to unfavourable environmental conditions), wind strengths on its southern flank are gale-force and this is combining with a strong ridge in the Northern Tasman Sea to generate yet another strong pulse of easterly groundswell for the East Coast later this weekend.

This Tropical Depression is embedded in a deep monsoon trough that extends all the way to the top of Cape York, where TC Kate was located this morning (having developed near Thursday Island on Thursday morning). Unfortunately, Kate is located well outside of Qld’s swell window, and is not viewed as a potential swell source in the short term. TC Kate was downgraded later this afternoon to a Tropical Low, but it should linger about the Northern Coral Sea for the next couple of days.

Yesterday evening (Saturday, 25 February) saw the surfers swap wetsuits for penguin suits as they glammed up for surfing’s night of nights – the Association of Surfing Professionals 2005 awards night.

Kelly Slater (USA) was officially crowned 2005 Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour champion in the ceremony and Chelsea Georgeson (AUS) was crowned 2005 ASP Women’s World Tour champion.

Both were extremely gracious when accepting their awards paying homage to their respective tour’s runners up in Andy Irons (HAW) and Sofia Mulanovich (PER) who both pushed the eventual winners creating what has been labelled the best finish to both tours in many years.
