It's Good To Be The King.
Shaun Joubert takes the first crown in the Quiksilver King Of The Groms Keegan Nel wins the U20 division.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 March, 2006 : - - In what was arguably one of the hottest days of the year, in excellent conditions at Witsands in Cape Town, Shaun Joubert blitzed his way through the premier grom division to take the first crown in the Quiksilver King Of The Groms series. In four to five-foot glassy rights and a few lefts on a perfect day in Cape Town when the wind forgot to blow, the first Quiksilver King of The Groms was ultimately a huge success and extremely well-received by the groms and their long-suffering parents, as well as the surfers in the U20 division.
Joubert, who surfed both divisions and made it to the quarters of the U20 division, seemed to be in the water the whole day, and showed incredible stamina to take the Grom final. He took out Michael February in their man-on-man semi. The other semi was contested by Dale Staples and Brendan Gibbens, with Gibbens getting the nod for the final. In perfect weather but somewhat tricky conditions it was Joubert who found the inside connections and linked turns from the outside to the inside to take the final from Gibbens and win the first crown of the series.
The U20 semis saw Jordy Smith beat Brett Shearer in a somewhat wave-starved first heat, with Jordy busting a huge 360 air on an outside set wave to secure his berth in the final. The second semi saw Keegan Nel win through over Dave Richards, who despite showing form throughout the day, was also somewhat starved for waves. The final was a fairly close affair, with Jordy only managing one decent scoring wave while Keegan, who waited patiently for sets, managed to get two good rides with some big turns and enough points for a win .
The inaugural Quiksilver King Of The Grom event presented by Peugeot and Samsung saw 90 amped surfers competing for the coveted King Of The Grom crown, as well as a return ticket to Hawaii for the winner of the U20 series.

The Peugeot Expression Session saw Damien Fahrenfort win R500 for the Best Air, and Brandon Roberts win the same amount for the Most Innovative Move for a huge carving 360 on an outside set wave.
The Zigzag Blowing Up Award was won by a blasting Brett Shearer, who was surfing hard the whole event and was unlucky not to make a final. He took home the Hand Grenade trophy and a grand in loose change for his efforts.
