Sport Unlimited Reef Spur dEBIS Cape Classic

4A rated South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) rated event
Glen Beach, Cape Town - South Africa
March 18 & 19, 2006

Out of Town Bodyboarder Wins Cape Classic

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 March, 2006 : - - Out of town bodyboarder Wesley Fisher (Durban) won the Pro division of the Sport Unlimited Reef Spur dEBIS Cape Classic held at Glen Beach in Cape Town on March 18 and 19. The 4A rated Cape Classic was the richest South African Bodyboarding Association (SABA) event ever to be held in the Cape boasting prizes and cash totalling R70 000.

The final day of the competition yielded a slight drop in swell size with contestable one metre waves. As the day progressed the incoming tide made for challenging surf but this did not deter the field of South Africa’s top ranked bodyboarders from putting on a great show for the spectators lining the shore.

Victory did not come easily for Fisher who fought for the duration of the close final to snatch the lead away from Sacha Specker (Cape Town), Philip Rodrigues (Durban) and Jonny Maritz (Cape Town) who were breathing down his neck.

The biggest upset of the day occurred when super star Adam Morley (Mossel Bay) was eliminated in the semi-finals. Morley cemented himself in the history books on day one by achieving a perfect score of 20 out of a possible 20 points for two consecutive flawless performances. Morley was ousted by experienced locals Jared Houston and Josh Kleve.

As predicted, best friends Jared Houston and Josh Kleve (both CT) both featured in the Junior finals with Kleve winning the title from Chris Elliot (Port Elizabeth). 2005 SA Junior Champion Houston took third ahead of Mathew Webster (Boland).

Defending event champion Pamela Bowren (Cape Town) was untouchable and easily reclaimed her title in the Women’s final. Shane Kirsten (Boland) rode exceptionally well to finish in the runner up slot ahead of Lize-Mari Ras (Durban) and Lyndall Pells (Plettenberg Bay).

Fourteen year old Cape Town bodyboarder Aden Kleve forced his older peers to sit up and take notice of him when he placed third in a final filled with the “usual suspects”. Sacha Specker (CT) rode to a predictable victory ahead of DK master Sasha Taljaard (Durban) and former SA Champion Vaughn Harris (George) in fourth. All eyes will be on Kleve in this highly competitive division in future events.

Divisions included pro, boys, juniors, men, women, masters, drop knee, under 12 boys, under 16 girls and development. For a full set of results please see below the press release.

In addition to the generous prizes the top performers earned valuable SABA rating points which accumulate over the year to determine the ultimate SABA champion.

A host of generous sponsors made the prestigious event possible; these include Sport Unlimited, Reef Wetsuits, dEBIS Fleet Management, Arnette sunglasses, Mike Stewart Science Project and Spur. The Western Province Bodyboarding Association was also extremely grateful for the fun activities arranged by the Son Surf Christian surf organization which included soccer, volleyball and rugby.

SABA would like to thank Afrique de Sud Backpackers for organising special rates for competitors; they can be contacted on (021) 4399028.
