Royden Bryson/Matt Moir win at Western Province Open

Western Province Open

ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour (PST) event
Cape Peninsula (Mobile venue)
25 - 26 March 2006

Bryson and Moir take shortboard and longboard WP Open titles respectively in excellent 4-5 foot Long Beach surf.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 March, 2006 : - - Royden Bryson of East London took advantage of a technical interference by local boy and fellow ASP World Qualifying Series campaigner Damien Fahrenfort to win the 2A rated WP Open in excellent 4 to 5 foot Long Beach surf at Kommetjie in the Cape Peninsula today (Sunday March 26).

Fahrenfort had the trophy and the R4000 prizepurse in his sights after posting two good scores early in the final but the consistent Bryson, who was the standout surfer in the smaller conditions on Day One, made no mistakes at all and deserved his victory. Both Bryden and Fahrenfort were not seeded for the event as they entered late and they had to surf their way to the final from Round One

Brandon Jackson of Durban was third and David Richards of Kommetjie came fourth. The beaten semi finalists were WP surfers  Quintin Jones and Ian Armstrong, Dylan Stone of Port Elizabeth and Frankie Oberholzer of Warner Beach.

In the Longboard division Matthew Moir of Kirstenhof showed why he is ranked third in the World in this discipline by producing a world class performance in every heat he surfed in. His semifinal performance in the perfect 5 foot Long Beach lefts was almost flawless but in the final he had to work hard to beat a determined Thomas King Kleynhans of Kommetjie.

In the end Moir's combination of traditional and contemporary surfing impressed the judges enough to give him the WP Open win  but Kleynhans will be pleased with his runner up spot.

Michael Grendon of Scarborough was third and William Wallace (S/Suburbs) came fourth while Brandon Jackson, Alan Robb (Kommetjie), Dylan Mc Cleod (PE) and Justin Bing (Hout Bay) were the beaten semi finalists.

The 2A rated Open Men's shortboard surfing and 2A rated Longboard  tournament took place at Long Beach on both days and attracted over 70 entries from all of South Africa’s top competitors in the two disciplines.

It is the only contest on the 2006 ASP Africa PST which involves both disciplines over the same weekend. The WP Open offered a total of R15 000 in prize-money and rating points on the 2006 ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour.

The tournament was presented by Surfing South Africa as an ASP Africa event in association with SA Longboarding and Western Province Surfing and  was made possible thanks to support from Surf Centre, New Balance, Holdfast, Castor King, Stubby Surfboards, Biggs Transport, First National Bank, Clickatell, Wardrobe, Grommets Cafe and Red Bull and the National Lottery..

It was the fourth of twenty five events for Men, Women, Pro Juniors and Longboarders that make up the record breaking 2006 ASP Africa PST season.
