Central Coast NSW to host ASP World Qualifying Series event!
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 March, 2006 : - - The Central Coast of NSW will finally play host to an outstanding field of international professional surfers for the inaugral Central Coast Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) event for men and women.
The Central Coast is a region of quality surf locations and has consistently produced outstanding world renown surfers for as long as professional surfing has existed with iconic names like Ross Clarke-Jones, the late Mark Sainsbury and more recently Shane Powell and Adrian Buchan all born and nurtured on the abundance of excellent Central Coast surf beaches .
This years event will be based at the Central Coast's most consistent quality beachbreak at Soldiers Beach which sits near the beautiful coastal haven of Toukley on the northern boundaries of the Central Coast and will take place in the prime Autumn surf season.
ASP Australasia Tour Manager Glenn Best enthusiastically welcomed the Central Coast Pro to the ASP Australasian Tour today by saying , " This event is a fantastic addition to the quality World Qualifying Series events that are running in our region. An event like this provides excellent opportunity to our emerging professional surfers and by running in such a quality surf location I'm sure we'll see an outstanding event that will promote surfing and the magnificent beaches of this region."
Young Central Coast surfer Matt Wilkinson (18 years/Copacabanna Beach) is certain to enter into this event as one of the favourites in the Open Mens division. A former world junior champion and now just entering into the open professional ranks, Wilkinson has one of the best junior records of any surfer world wide and will relish this opportunity on his home beachbreaks.
Other quality Australian surfers entered in the Central Coast Pro include the events highest seeded surfer, Sydney's Steve Clements along with Sunshine Coast's Ryan Campbell, South Africa's Damien Fahrenfort and Gold Coast aerial surfing specialist Dion Agius. With many highly rated surfers from Australia heading to Europe for some concurrent WQS events, the opportunity to place highly and aquire valuable ASP World Qualifying rating points has been enhanced at this years Central Coast Pro.
Byron Bay's Laurina McGrath is the number one seeded womens surfer in a quality field that includes world number two rated pro junior surfer Nicola Atherton (Bronte Beach) and young South Coast sensation Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa).
However, most interest in the womens will focus on Hawaiian surfer Bethany Hamilton. Hamiton was a gifted young surfer when she was tragically attacked by a shark and lost her arm in Hawaii in 2003. Her recovery and success to get back into the surf amazed the sporting world. Now, as she takes on professional surfing at this level her quest and challenges will also be followed by all in the entire sporting world.
