Portuguese surfers dominate first day of the Rip Curl Pro Portuguese version below
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 April, 2006 : - - The first day of this ninth stage of the World Qualifying Series (WQS), the Rip Curl Pro, set on the reef break of Lagido, in Peniche, Portugal, started with 2-3 feet of perfect waves.
76 national and international athletes submitted their entries as the first round took place in the morning with the Portuguese surfers getting through to the second round with the best results. Surfers like David Raimundo, João Guedes and Paulo “do Bairro” Rodrigues gave no chance to their opponents and showed high levels of local knowledge over one of Portugal’s most famous reef breaks.
“The first heat ran smoothly for me”, said Paulo do Bairro. “I had four good scores and two of them over five points, which is not bad considering the waves conditions”.
At the end of the morning the organization checked out alternatives spots, as the Rip Curl Pro is a mobile event and if the head judge finds it necessary the contest can continue at another spot. Since the tide was getting low and Lagido was holding on the swell, the second round started just after lunch, always followed closely by the Eastpak PWC, which increased the security for the athletes.
One of the biggest absences of the event, for that matter, was the portuguese-german surfer, Marlon Lipke. One of the Portuguese public favourites, Lipke was unable to participate in the Rip Curl Pro because of a recent shoulder injury.
But other national surfers did their part… and amazed the crowd attending at the beach! Surfers like Ruben Gonzalez and David Raimundo, which played one of the most competitive heats of this first day.
“It was a close call from the beginning till the end”, said Ruben Gonzalez that finished in second place, after Raimundo. “David had a very good beginning and, in these conditions, it was very difficult to follow him”.
David Raimundo told us his trick: “I was patient and waited for the best waves. Also, I started to pushed them out, making them believe that the good waves were outside, when, in fact, the best were on the inside… and it worked!”, said the surfer with lots of laughs.
But Gonzalez isn’t out of competition and has his mind hooked on the best results. “This year I’m 100% focused on the European title and will do my best to achieve it”, said the athlete, as this stage of the WQS also counts for the EPSA ratings. So, much more is expected from this surfer from Guincho until the end of the event, next sunday.
At the end of the day, the organization was pleased with all the results. “It went very well”, said António Pedro, from Alfarroba. “We were expecting for the waves to be even smaller, but, after checking other spots, Lagido was the right call”. As for tomorrow, the swell tends to get smaller, “but the wave period is going to increase and the swell direction is going to change to north-northwest, which is perfect for Lagido”. “As for Sunday… there’re no certain calls yet, but it’s my conviction that probably we’ll be ending this event at Supertubos… a classic in this Rip Curl Pros at Peniche!”
Either way the athletes will get their chance to give their best, at the contest itself or at the Red Bull Expression Session, which will be held during the weekend, with 250€ of prize-money to the athlete who does the best manoeuvre.
Tomorrow will also be held a Press Conference at the event’s Press Centre with presences of Peniche mayor, Mr. António José Correia, José Farinha, from Rip Curl Portugal, and some of the surfing athletes. All press is welcome, at 3PM.

Portugueses em força no primeiro dia do Rip Curl Pro
O Rip Curl Pro, nona etapa do circuito mundial de surf WQS e segunda do circuito europeu, teve início hoje na praia do Lagido, em Peniche. A prova deste ano comemora a sua 18ª edição (não se realizou em apenas dois anos, desde 1987), sendo pontuada com uma estrela no circuito de qualificação e contando com um prize-money de 10.000 dólares. É, portanto, uma data histórica para um campeonato não menos histórico.
Num total de 76 atletas inscritos e com ondas de 0,5 metro, o destaque deste dia vai para a presença de muitos surfistas portugueses na primeira fase. Aproveitando para iniciar a época competitiva em Portugal, os atletas nacionais deram provas de conhecer melhor que ninguém a onda do Lagido e dominaram as suas baterias, apesar das condições inconsistentes do mar, que possibilitavam aplicar apenas uma ou duas manobras por onda.
“As ondas não são as melhores mas, como já vimos anteriormente, muitos campeonatos já decorreram em condições bem piores”, afirmou um dos speakers da prova, Nuno Jonet, considerado por muitos como um dos pais do surf português. A destacar neste primeiro round os desempenhos de David Raimundo, Nuno Telmo, João Guedes e Paulo “do Bairro” Rodrigues, que deram cartas e prometem dar que falar no desenrolar da prova.
O segundo round do Rip Curl Pro foi para a água às 14:10h, hora confirmada oficialmente pelos relógios Rip Curl - patrocinadores oficiais deste evento - com uma bateria composta pelos espanhóis Ivo Meira e Luís Rodrigues e pelo jovem português Miguel Mouzinho, que venceu muito bem mais uma eliminatória neste primeiro dia.
A grande ausência deste heat, e até mesmo do campeonato, foi Marlon Lipke. O luso-germânico era uma das maiores esperanças portuguesas para este WQS, mas uma lesão no ombro levou-o a afastar-se da competição. A nova geração de surfistas portugueses teve uma boa prestação, com Edgar Nozes, Miguel Ximenes, César Rosa e João Guedes a conseguirem passar à fase seguinte.
Ruben Gonzalez, bi-campeão nacional, juntamente com David Raimundo, conseguiram surfar as ondas do Lagido de forma única, protagonizando uma das baterias mais renhidas do campeonato ao eliminarem Melvin Lipke e David Echague. Para Ruben “Foi um sufoco do início ao fim do heat. O David teve um bom início e, com estas condições de mar é difícil acompanhá-lo. Tínhamos que apontar para a maior onda do set. Foi um grande picanço dentro d'água!” No que respeita às suas ambições deste ano, “Estou concentrado em alcançar o título europeu. Vou trabalhar muito para isso e esperar que os resultados apareçam.”
David Raimundo, foi o atleta nacional que mostrou mais garra neste reefbreak de Peniche. “Para fazer um bom score temos que apanhar as melhores ondas. A minha estratégia foi tentar afastá-los do pico. Dava a ideia que a onda rebentava mais fora para depois apanhá-las mais no inside. Apesar do mar estar pequeno, temos de aproveitar para manobrar logo na primeira parte da onda, caso contrário é difícil alcançar bons resultados. Estou muito motivado para este campeonato, apesar de andar a surfar pouco,” confessou o também director executivo da Associação Nacional de Surfistas.
Num dos últimos heats do dia, José Gregório conseguiu aplicar as suas já habituais manobras fortes e, juntamente com Kepa Acero, passou à fase seguinte, eliminando Edgar Nozes e Volodia Pertsowsky.
Para António Pedro, director da Alfarroba, “O primeiro dia de prova correu bem. Estávamos à espera que o mar ficasse mais pequeno mas o reef do Lagido aguentou-se. Destaco o bom surf apresentado pelo David Raimundo naquela que é uma das suas ondas preferidas. No que respeita às previsões do estado do mar, as ondas vão baixar mas, com a mudança de direcção da ondulação para Norte, acaba por ser positivo para o Lagido. Destaco o importante apoio da Câmara Municipal de Peniche e ainda a presença neste evento da mota de água da Eastpak, que não só permitiu a captação de imagens diferentes como, sobretudo aumentou o grau de segurança dos atletas,” concluiu.

Durante o fim-de-semana terá ainda lugar a Red Bull Expression Session que entregará €250,00 ao autor da melhor manobra, e onde poderão ser vistas algumas das manobras de surf mais arrojadas.
