Rip Curl Pro continues with high level of surfing Portuguese version below
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 April, 2006 : - - The second day of this year’s Rip Curl Pro in Peniche started early with clean one foot waves and light off-shore winds at Lagido’s reef break. The morning was filled with the remaining heats of the second round, with a remarkable performance from national standout Francisco “Xiquilim” Rodrigues, which overturned British veteran Russel Winter and former Spanish champion Michel Velasco, two of the favorites.
“The heat turned on ok”, said the young surfer from Costa de Caparica. “I was well placed and all alone in the line-up when a great wave came and I was able to catch it”. This strike of luck turned out to be a 7.17 scored wave that assured “Xiquilim” a place in the third round.
Tânio Barreto was also the man during these morning’s heats. The winner of last year’s Rip Curl Pro wants to take the prize home once again and started with a bang. The Brazilian surfer knocked out his competitors with two scores of 7,67 and 6,17. “There were few waves at the time, so I tried to keep the priority and aimed for the bigger ones, getting scores over 5 points”, told us Tânio. The Brazilian surfer is back in Spain, after a season at his homeland, and is going to try to attack fearlessly this year’s European tour.
In the afternoon things started to heat up as the waves increased and the third round hit the water with an all Portuguese run. A fight between titans as the two Portuguese surfing champions José Gregório and Ruben Gonzalez didn’t give a chance to the young surfer from Algarve Miguel Mouzinho.
Txaber Trojaola from Euskadi and Brazilian Davi de Jesus were two other surfers that also gave some good surfing moments to all the public that came to the beach on this sunny day. The whole time the Eastpak PWC was in the water watching closely the line-up and reinforcing water security.
The best wave of the competition so far goes to Spanish Pablo Gutierrez, which in heat 5 of the third round got a 9.17 in a long and very maneuverable wave, catching a good ride into the quarter-finals, with Aritz Aranburu. Also in the quarter-finals is Portuguese Nuno Telmo that, with a lot of attitude, won his heat and also won intensive cheers from the public that greeted him in the sand.
Rip Curl Pro bigger and better next year.
After the success of this and the other Rip Curl Pro events in Peniche, Gerald D’Avezac from Rip Curl Europe revealed the possibility of presenting a bigger event next year. “Everything is possible and we’re working on the possibility of organizing a bigger event with our Rip Curl partners from Australia”, said the events director, considering that Peniche has all the conditions even for a WCT.
As for Peniche’s Mayor, António José Correia, “this partnership - between the city hall, Rip Curl and Alfarroba – has worked beautifully! And the experience gained over these past years and the good conditions of this wonderful city can make possible a much bigger event”. An intention also welcomed by José Farinha, from Rip Curl Portugal and António Pedro from Alfarroba.
With the third round all finished today, tomorrow will be the all for all, as the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will lead to the consecration of another Rip Curl Pro champion.
Tomorrow will also be held the Red Bull Expression Session. The surfer that makes the most completed unbelievable maneuver will take home the 250€ prize-money.
The swell is expected to pick up over night and in the morning surfers and organizers may be surprised with some good waves. Either way, as this event is a mobile one, there’s always the possibility, like last year, of moving to Supertubos. All will be defined at 8.30 a.m. marked on Rip Curl’s official watch.

Bom nível de surf e boas ondas no segundo dia do Rip Curl Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 April, 2006 : - - O Rip Curl Pro seguiu a bom ritmo e com muito sol durante o segundo dia de prova. O mar oscilou entre o meio e um metro de altura e, logo na primeira bateria do dia, confirmou-se a boa prestação de atletas portugueses iniciada ontem.
Francisco “Xiquilim” Rodrigues, graças a uma onda pontuada com 7.17 pontos protagonizou a surpresa da manhã, eliminando o top mundial Russel Winter e o ex-campeão espanhol Michel Velasco, considerados favoritos à partida. “O heat correu bem. Estava bem colocado no pico quando entrou a melhor onda, consegui apanhá-la e aplicar o meu surf. Mas lá dentro é um jogo táctico, com muitos nervos à mistura”, frisou o surfista da Costa de Caparica.
O heat 14 juntou, curiosamente, dois surfistas de Peniche: Pedro “Kid” Santos e Nuno Silva. O sorridente “Kid” teve mais sorte que o seu conterrâneo ao conseguir alcançar a pontuação suficiente para ultrapassar esta fase, em conjunto com o francês Fabrice Gelez.
Tânio Barreto, vencedor da edição de 2005 do Rip Curl Pro, comprovou dentro d'água todo o seu favoritismo ao passar a eliminatória em primeiro lugar, contabilizando nas suas duas melhores ondas 7,67 e 6,17 pontos. Para o surfista brasileiro, “Apesar de haver poucas ondas a bateria foi bem disputada. Procurei manter a prioridade no pico e apanhar as melhores do set. Depois apareceu a tal onda que encaixou bem na bancada, em que consegui alcançar a melhor nota da bateria.” Tânio Barreto colocou a fasquia alta em relação à edição deste ano do Rip Curl Pro: “Vou tentar ser bi-campeão deste evento. Vou concentrar-me no circuito WQS e procurar conseguir um bom patrocínio na Europa para alcançar melhores resultados.”
O surfista júnior César Rosa também conseguiu uma boa performance ao suplantar o veterano João Alexandre “Dapin” na liderança do heat, tendo ambos seguido para os oitavos-de final.
Os oitavos-de-final começaram no início da tarde com uma bateria composta totalmente por atletas nacionais, onde Ruben Gonzalez e José Gregório levaram a melhor sobre Miguel Mouzinho, já que Aécio Flávio não compareceu na eliminatória. Ruben teve um desempenho impressionante, iniciando a bateria com um 7.83 e finalizando com um 8.10. “Apanhei duas ondas boas porque consegui estar no timing certo. É sempre difícil competir contra o “Grego” que é um dos melhores competidores a nível nacional e europeu.” Questionado sobre a possibilidade de ser um português a vencer a edição deste ano, algo que não acontece desde 98, o surfista do Guincho mostrou-se tranquilo, “Vou tentar que todos os heats corram desta forma até chegar à final. Depois logo se vê...” deixou no ar o bi-campeão nacional e detentor do melhor score do dia.
Txaber Trojaola e Kepa Acero seguiram para os quartos-de-final deixando para trás David Raimundo (um dos melhores surfistas do primeiro dia de prova) e Luís Rodrigues. Pablo Solar e Iker Fuentes também avançaram para a fase seguinte da prova, o mesmo acontecendo com o marroquino Abdel El Harim e com o brasileiro David de Jesus, que conseguiram eliminar dois surfistas cotados como Spencer Hargraves e Nuande Silva.
A destacar a boa prestação de Pablo Gutierrez que conseguiu surfar a melhor onda do campeonato até ao momento, alcançando uma pontuação de 9.17 pontos em 10 possíveis.
A Conferência de Imprensa marcada para esta tarde contou com a presença do Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Peniche, Dr.António José Correia, José Farinha, da Rip Curl Portugal, Gerald D'Avezac, director de eventos da Rip Curl Europa e António Pedro, da Alfarroba. Com o mar da praia do Lagido como cenário natural, todos os intervenientes mostraram vontade em melhorar a qualidade deste evento já no próximo ano, através dum maior apoio por parte dos patrocinadores e de um envolvimento empreendedor da autarquia. Para António José Correia, “a parceria entre a Câmara Municipal de Peniche, a Rip Curl e a Alfarroba tem corrido muito bem. A experiência adquirida ao longo dos anos poderá resultar num evento de maior dimensão e prestígio num futuro muito próximo.”
No balanço do segundo dia de prova, António Pedro da Alfarroba, empresa organizadora do evento salientou que “de manhã o mar esteve pequeno mas houve uma maior frequência de ondas. Tivemos necessidade de parar a prova e, quando recomeçámos com a maré mais vazia, a qualidade das ondas melhorou, acabando por ser um dia de competição mais tranquilo. Para amanhã espera-se que o mar suba e, com a influência do vento Norte, provavelmente, iremos transferir o evento para a praia de Supertubos. Mas veremos pela manhã!”
Amanhã irão desenrolar-se os quartos-de-final do Rip Curl Pro rumo até à tão esperada final. Quando os ponteiros do relógio oficial do evento marcarem as 8.30h será efectuado o check-in. Para os adeptos do surf da nova geração, terá lugar a sempre espectacular Red Bull Expression Session que premiará a melhor manobra com €250. Os mais novos também irão ter o seu momento de consagração, com a realização da final masculina do GromSearch.
