GIRLS RIP AT THE ROXY SURF JAM
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 April, 2006 : - - With the swell slightly bigger than yesterday, and with running three-foot lefts and rights at Durban's Bay Of Plenty, it was a full and exciting day of surfing for the top girl surfers in the country. With the wind staying away for most of the day, and with the waves coming through highly contestable and rippable, the girls showed everyone their best, with some radical performances.
Nikita Robb was a stand-out throughout the day, culminating with her scoring the day's only ten-point ride. Chantelle Rautenbach was also on-form, and contested the U/16 final as well as the U/20 Pro Junior final. Rosy Hodge showed everyone how much her WQS experience is worth by winning the U/20 Pro Junior Final.
In the U/14 division it was Bianca Buitendag who took the victory from Heidi Palmboom, but the word on the beach was that the U/14 girls were all ripping, stepping up a notch or two in their performance levels, and are looking good for the future.
Chantelle Rautenbach surfed very well in her final but was beaten by Tarryn Chudleigh who tore some of the long right-handers apart, and also found a few scoring lefts.
Nikita Robb blasted in the U/18 final, taking it from Danielle le Roux, Grace Rheeders and Bianca Buitendag. It was an excellent result for Buitendag, who won the U/14 division and showed her mettle to the older surfers.
The Pro Junior had all four of the contestants ripping, despite the fact that the south-easter came up just before the final and did its best to ruffle the waves for the girls. They weren't fazed in the least and carried on surfing hard and busting some turns. Tammy-Lee Smith came in fourth, and Chantelle Rautenback was third. Nikita Rob continued her blazing way to secure a good second place against a ripping Rosy Hodge. Rosy, who is on her way to Fiji next week Monday to continue her WQS campaign, competing as a 'wild card' in the Roxy Fiji Pro, was super-stoked with her result; "The event was such fun, but to be honest, I was really surprised that I won. I was using my backup board, and so many of the girls were ripping. Nikita Robb was going off in some heats so I figured I had a tough battle, but I'm just so stoked I won. So many other girls were ripping as well, and the standard of the girls surfing was really high. The way the under fourteen girls were surfing was unbelievable as well", commented Rosanne.
