SECOND KING CROWNED AT NAHOON REEF
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 April, 2006 : - - In solid, contestable waves at Nahoon Reef in East London, Matthew Bromley of Kommetjie surfed a blistering final against Michael February, also of Kommetjie, to win the crown at the second King of the Groms. Bromley, who pulled off some solid power gouges and tight turns, defeated February in their WCT style man-on-man final in the prestige U/15 division. Wave selection was a major consideration with the pushing tide reef waves, and the point-scorers were the waves that linked through to the inside.
Said Bromly on his final, "I had a really nice wave in the beginning of the final, but my second wave was just a short one. Luckily I picked up a really good one at the end of the heat and that was the wave that did it for me. Obviously I'm really stoked right now, and I'd really like to thank The Lord for giving me all these good waves during the day." he finished with a huge smile.
Second placed Michael February was a bit unlucky in the final, not finding any good linking waves and had to settle for the number two slot. Equal third was Indi Rooken-Smith from Mossel Bay and Beyrick de Vries from Umhlanga. Bromley now holds a good lead in the ratings going into the final event in Durban. The first prize in the Grom series is an entry into the International King Of The Groms event in Capbreton, France.
In the U/20 Pro Junior division it was Brandon Jackson from Durban North who showed brilliant form to defeat Rudy Palmboom from The Bluff. While suffering slightly from the onshore breeze, the waves were still highly rippable, and both surfers were smashing some lips. Jacko was on a mission to win this event, and had been dominating his heats all event.
"I was so stoked with my performance in the semi". Said Jackson after the event. "I'm just as stoked with winning the event, but I found my form in that semi. I've been in a bit of a slump lately, having two shocker results in a row, so this win was just what I needed to give myself some confidence. I haven't really got that much of a chance of winning the series because of my poor showing in the first event, but I'm going all out to win the final event."
Keegan Nel, who won the first King of The Groms U/20 division in Cape Town was eliminated in the earlier rounds, but still holds the ratings lead. Brett Shearer and Dave Richardson, who have both made the semi-finals in both events, are sitting tie second. The series winner of the U/20 division will receive a return ticket to Hawaii.
In the Peugeot Samsung Expression Session it was Brandon Roberts who was the man of the moment, pulling off some big airs and turns to win both the Biggest Air award as well as the Most Futuristic Move award. He won a thousand bucks for his effort.
The Zigzag Blowing Up Award went to Rudy Palmboom, who was surfing hard and fast the whole event, and peaked in his semi-final against Dave Richards. Rudy took the Hand Grenade Trophy and the grand hard cash for his efforts.
