Single Fin Experience
Contest is fully booked for its third year!
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 April, 2006 : - -The event has gained popularity from humble beginnings 3 years ago, seeing the one day contest fully booked out with over 50 competitors. Major Sponsor ‘Onboard” has given the event a boost donating $4000 in prizes, and coinciding the event with the grand opening of a completely refitted store at Pt. Noarlunga.
After the event competitors and event organizers were also given an extra treat with a drinks and finger food at the Pt Noarlunga Hotel. A 2 metre swell at Middleton Bay gave competitors the platform to test their skills riding 70’s single fin boards with many competitors riding the single fin boards for the first time.
Many of the competitors commented that the single fin boards performed differently to their modern short boards, adding another factor X in determining who will win this contest. It also gave some competitors the opportunity to wipe the dust of their collectable single fin boards for a wave test
With the emphasis on having fun in the single fin division, seventeen year old Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island) demonstrated his adaptability by taking first place in both the junior division and the open men’s division.
Kelvin Thomas (Osborne) has competed in the over 50’s division since the contest started 3 years ago. “It’s a good excuse to get my old single fin out of the garage in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, but I hope I might win some of the prizes.”
The event also caters for the popular 8’ Modern Malibu with Jason Russell (Pt Noarlunga Sth 13.7 points narrowly defeating a normally unstoppable Andy Hancock (13.4 pts) also from Pt Noarlunga Sth) did manage to latch onto the tube ride of the day in the random surf conditions.
With the incoming tide the large right hand peaks out the back tendered to fluctuate. Wave selection in the open single fin women’s division gave Cheryl Peat (Seaford) 7.6 pt the slight advantage ever second placing Lisa Dry (Seaford) 7 points.
Peter Cox (Middleton) 10 points on a large right hand wave way out the back in the last 20 seconds of the over 50’s men’s single fin division was unable to catch up to Jack Howarth (Seaford) on 11.5 points. Jack said “I can’t believe we used to think these boards were really good”.
