Smith, Logie Standouts at Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 April, 2006 : - - Surfers stepped up to the challenge of the first South African World Qualifying Series event of 2006 with world class performances on day one of the One Star Lizzard Nandos Surf Pro, presented by the Weekend Witness on Friday.
1-1.5 meter waves, fanned by steady offshore winds peeled across New Pier all day, affording surfers the perfect canvas to display their surfing flair. The Pro Mens divisions took to the surf at lunchtime, with surfers getting to work on the reeling walls that held up beautifully in the idyllic winds.
Durban's Dane Logie was the day's standout grabbing a near perfect 9.0 out of a possible ten points for one of the bigger set waves of the day. A series of massive turns and buckets of spray earned him the heat win over junior surfer Josch Schmeltzer (Westville), big wave rider John McCarthy (Durban) and Michael Frew (Morningside).
Logie's highest combined two wave heat total of 15.83 out of a possible 20.00 points remained unmatched, until junior surfer Brett Shearer's (Cape Town) 16.07 out of a possible twenty points, saw him replace Logie at the top of the best average heat score list.
Not too far behind Shearer was former PE surfer Dylan Stone (Bluff) whose near perfect 8.50 score was the second highest individual wave score of the day. Stone failed to find a second high scoring ride, forcing him to settle for second place.
Stanley Badger (Durban) captured the crowd's attention after advancing through the trials into the main event in the first heat of the day. Badger got to work on the peeling walls, posting one excellent score, and another solid ride to defeat Manfred Adrio (Morningside), Brandon Roberts (Cape Town) and Hilton Lawrence (Durban North).
Lee Bisset (Durban) proved to be on-form, posting four, lightening fast backhand re-entries, throwing huge tails of spray for a decisive victory over Justin Maisch (Uvongo), Clinton Cross (Scottburgh) and Andrew Lange (South Coast).
In the Pro Junior Men's Division, South Africa's Internationally acclaimed junior surf star and 2006 World Qualifying Series rookie Jordy Smith (Umbilo) proved unstoppable with the highest individual wave score of the Junior Mens division as well as the highest heat score of the entire contest a 16.16 out of a possible 20.00.
