Blazing Sun and Hot Surfing As The Girls Hit The Water.
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 April, 2006 : - - Day number two of the SA Champs saw the event back at Long Beach, after yesterday's cooking afternoon session at The Ledge in Kommetjie. The waves at Long beach were surprisingly good, with the swell about double the size of yesterday and some highly contestable three-foot lefts and rights coming through.
First to hit the water was the remaining three heats of the U/20 boys, with some power surfing from the top surfers in that division. Wesley Grey(WP) showed everyone how much local knowledge actually does count, when he blitzed the first heat and took the number one spot ahead of Warren Ahischlager from Border.
In the next heat Keegan Nel, another Border surfer, produced a comfortable win over Brett Shearer from Western Province. "I got two good waves out there, a left and a right." said Keegan. "My right-hander scored nine points, and the left was about a six." Nel made very clear his intentions after that heat. "Well, I'm feeling confident right now, and I want to win this event." Nel was runner up in this division in Durban last year.
Kyle Beach from KZN took the final heat in the U/20 boys from Southern Cape representative Dale Staples.
The Open Women highlighted strong performances from the Robarts twins, Penny and Tammy, both surfing for Boland, while KZN's Tasha Mentasti posted a first place as did Southern KZN's Sarah Johnston-Maritz.
Jessica Matthews (EP) placed second behind Johnston-Maritz, and is also through to the next round.
In the good high tide surf and under the relentless Peninsula sun, the U/20 Girls hit the water.
Boosted by the cheering of her team from the beach, Zululand's Tamlynne Smith took the first heat from Border's Nikita Robb, while Tanika Hoffman(SKZN) and Caylin De Reuck both progressed their heats.
Other stand-outs were Chantelle Rautenbach (Bol) and Sarah Nicholson (WP) as well as Telana Flanagan(Border) and Ruth Saunders from team Eastern Province.
The Plate Event also featured on Day Two, with all early eliminated surfers looking to do battle and regain some honour after their first round heat losses. The Plate Event runs alongside the Main Event, and goes all the way through to the Plate Finals on Sunday. The prognosis for tomorrow looks good, with another day of fine weather and firing surf predicted.
Full results of today's surfing will appear on the Surfing South Africa website (www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za) later.
