SA Juniors Arrive In Brazil For World Junior Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 May, 2006 : - - Former Under 16 World Champion Jordy Smith, team captain Klee Strachan, Rudy Palmboom and Kyle Lane, Quiksilver King of the Groms champions Shaun Joubert and Matthew Bromley, Billabong Junior finalist Haydn Mac Nicol, Australian based WP surfer Jaco Steyn, SA Under 16 champion Nikita Robb, former national Under 14 champion Tarryn Chudleigh, Roxy Surf Jam star Chantelle Rautenbach and talented new cap Alice Mc Gregor arrived in Brazil Monday (May 1) to compete in the 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Championships in Maresias, Brazil.
The SA Junior Team is funded by the National Lottery Board.
The team were presented their colours by legendary coach Graham Hynes at an official Colours awards evening last Saturday attended by some of the senior surfers who competed in the Quiksilver SA Championships in the Cape Peninsula.
The World Junior Champs gets under way on May 6 and ends with the Finals on May 14 and is the fourth edition of the ISA sanctioned annual tournament which was first held in Durban in May 2003. Since then it has taken place in Tahiti in 2005 and at Huntington Beach in California late last year and next year Portugal will host the World's leading junior championship.
The championships will feature surfers from twenty nine countries, double the number that surfed in the 2003 event in South Africa. As far as the team event is concerned, defending champions, Hawaii will find it hard to hang on to the title if the Brazilians, who won in 2003 and were runners up in Tahiti and the USA, have anything to do with it.
Australia were champions in 2004 but slipped to fourth place just ahead of South Africa last year and they will be keen to set the record straight and beat the tough Brazilians at home. South Africa is hoping to move up into fourth place this year.
Prior to the start of the world championships, South Africa will take on New Zealand in the tradtional SANZ Challenge contest that takes place between the two countries prior to every World Championships and World Games
