International Surfing Association Maresias, Brazil. 6 - 14 May 2006
Team Australia arrive in Brasil
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 May, 2006 : - - Team Australia has arrived at Sao Paulo airport tired but excited to be getting the final stages of their 2006 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships campaign underway. The event is being held on Maresias Beach, close to Sao Sebastian, Brazil from May 6 to 14.
Current conditions are about 1.5 metres with light onshore wind. The swell has been pumping here for a few days and is expected to continue. Already teams from New Zealand, Italy, Barbados, France, Japan, Tahiti have taken up residence and were training on the contest site today.
The Brasil Team chose its final surfers last weekend in a major event on this same beach and many local surfers, basically unknown nationally apparently qualified for the team. So the stage is set for some great confrontations over the week.
Team Australia Head Coach, Sasha Stocker believes this team has the capacity to win, “our team this year has been showing some excellent form in the lead up events to the championships and I am hoping they can continue that form over the next couple of weeks”.
Team Australia will compete in the three age divisions of under 18 boys and girls plus under 16 boys. There is also a tag-team event and overall championship team.
Team Australia made a clean sweep of the championships in 2004 and is keen to lay claim to again to the title of “best junior surfing nation” in the world.
Team Australia would like to recognize the Australian Sports Commission for their ongoing support of the program along with support of the team from Casuarina Domain Resort Rec Club, Rhythm, Salomon, Gorilla Grip, FCS, Endura, and BC Hats.
The annual junior championship is hosted by the International Surfing Association (ISA) with support from Quiksilver. Team profiles are available here
