Hawaii Team sent off to World Championships with aloha!

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 May, 2006 : - - The Hawaii surf community and industry came together on Sunday night to send-off the Hawai’i World Team with support and aloha. The month-long effort to raise funds for the Hawai’i Amateur Surfing Association’s World Team ended in a night of fun and music and at the HASA send-off party at Local Motion Waikiki on April 30, which was recently declared World Team Hawai’i Day by governor Linda Lingle.

The defending world champs of the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships were the guests of honor at the fundraising party, which included awesome prize giveaways, a live auction, and entertainment by big name Hawai’i entertainers, including Kapena and Go Jimmy Go.

The twelve young surfers and coach Tommy Asing will arrive in Brazil on Friday (after a long trip including mechanical problems, delays and missed flights) to await the start of the contest this Saturday, May 6. They will be competing against 27 other countries in three divisions, with the scores of the top three athletes in each division combined to determine the World Junior Championship team of 2006.

Keep up-to-date on the Hawai’i team’s results at http://surf.quiksilver.com/2006/isa/

Mahalo, Hawai’i, for helping Hawai’i’s own World Team of amateur surfers get to Brazil to defend their world title! And mahalo to the following whose contributions inspired and/or rekindled a sense of pride in these young athletes and for surfing, the Hawaiian “sport of kings.”
