Jamaican surfers relegated to losers' round

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 May, 2006 : - - In a disappointing first day showing at the World Junior Surfing Championships being held in Mariseas, Brazil, Jamaica's junior surfers were relegated to the repercharge round when they got into action yesterday.

Jamaica had two third-placed finishers in Jason Pusey and Ackeam Phillips and a fourth-placed finish by Shane Simmonds in the Under-16 division.

In the Under-18 division Jamaica had two fourth-placed showings in Eneson Lightbourne and Lloyd Jacks.

According to coach Eugene Miller the "conditions were very difficult" for the surfers, but "we are not the worst off by a long shot as other teams have had the same results as us or worst".

Each heat consists of four surfers with the top two advancing to the next round and the third- and fourth-placed finishers being relegated to the losers or repercharge round where they have a second chance to advance to the next round by competing against the other losers.

"We are still upbeat as we realise we are a new team on the circuit with not much experience, but the fact that our surfers were able to come away with two third-placed finishes gives us hope for the next round," Miller said. "Also, I don't think any of our juniors produced their best performances in this round so we can expect them to step it up when they next compete."

The competition continues today from 6:00 am (local time).
