Brits bust out in Brazil
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 May, 2006 : - - The British Team completed their first day of competition today at the World Junior Surfing Games in Brazil, the Olympics of surfing, against 28 of the worlds best surfing nations. The Brits have been training and acclimatising in the sub tropical Brazilian climate for the past 4 days and have experienced one of the best swells to hit the area this season.
Extremely powerful double overhead (six to eight foot) waves from a storm in the Antarctic was just the tonic for the Team who relished the warm water and freedom from winter full suits, hoods and gloves.
Todays competition was the first round for the boys in under eighteen and under sixteen categories. There were some excellent individual performances from Tom Butler Newquay), Reubyn Ash (Bude)and Jayce Robinson (St. Ives) in the contestable three foot waves towards the Teams goal of breaking into the top eight. Thankfully there was a respite from the heat as low cloud helped lower the temperatures.
The second round of the boys starts tomorrow along with the first round of the girls competition and there are some tough heats for the Brits. A mild bout of stomach upsets has also swept through the camp that adds to the challenge of competing out of season for the young team.
The event in Brazil has attracted a record number of 28 countries who will be competing over the week long event. Friends and family in the UK can follow the contest online at http://surf.quiksilver.com/2006/isa/ . Photos and reports from the Team camp will be available throughout the event from the BSA office.
