Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships -

Opening functions and final team preparation underway.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 May, 2006 : - - After another day of heavy surf yesterday, today [sat] has dawned with smaller waves but still a consistency in the contest zone that would challenge competitors. Judges briefings were held yesterday by contest Head Judge Glen Elliot, who is the ISA Judging Co-ordinator [and Surfing Australia Judging Co-Ordinator].

The confederation of Surfing Brasil have done a great job setting up the infrastructure for the event and all teams are happy with their accommodations and general arrangements.

Team Australia broke 3 boards in the extreme conditions on day one but didnt increase the tally yesterday, despite some super heavy waves. Spirits are high but all surfers here realize the break will be challenging as far as wave selection is concerned.

Today the managers meeting is first off, where final team lists and arrengements are locked in. Following at midday will be a march past of all teams through the street to the civic square. Local school children will be carrying flags of the nations and the "sands of the world" ceremony will be held where sand brought from all participating countries is poured into a glass box to commemorate the coming together of all 29 surfing nations here.

    Competitive heats begin tomorrow.
