Team Australia continue to impress at Quiksilver ISA WJSC

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 May, 2006 : - - The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Maresias Beach Brazil resumed today with the U/16 Boys and U/18 Girls round two heats. Our Australian Junior Team performed excellent in the 2- 4 foot washing conditions which proved difficult and testing.

U/16 Boys surfer Davey Cathels (Narrabeen NSW) gave a polished performance, controlling his twenty minute heat from start to finish posting an 8.0 and 5.83 to easily progress into round three, ‘I felt well prepared for my heat today. The conditions were really tricky but I am stoked things went my way’.

Chris Friend (sunshine Coast QLD) and Owen Wright (Culburra NSW) placed second in their round two heats to progress into round three tomorrow. Garrett Parkes was eliminated to the requalifying round after a slow start to his heat. Parkes eventually managed to pick up a solid eight point ride but could not find a second wave to advance. The Byron Bay boy then had to surf in the repo charge round where he posted two good scores to win his heat and remain in the event.

In the U/18 girls division, Jess Hickson (Boomerang Beach NSW) put on a great display of fluent surfing to win her heat today. ‘I was a little nervous before my heat, but as soon as I got my first wave I felt fine. Now its time to get serious’ Jess said.

Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa NSW), Kira Townsend (Sawtell NSW) and Angela Keighran (Mullaway NSW) all placed second in their heats and will also surf in round three tomorrow.

Team Australia would like to recognize the Australian Sports Commission for their ongoing support of the program along with support of the team from Casuarina Domain Resort Rec Club, Rhythm, Salomon, Gorilla Grip, FCS, Endura, and BC Hats.

The annual ISA World Junior Championships is hosted by the International Surfing Association (ISA) with support from Quiksilver.
