South Africa still in a Strong Position at End of Day Three
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 May, 2006 : - - Day three of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships continued in clean 3-4 foot waves in Maresias, Brazil with South Africa still in a strong position with five days to go.
Matthew Bromley (Kommetjie) got the South African Team off to a good start placing second in his qualifying round two heat while Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) placed second in a very close heat with two Brazilians; relegating one of them to the repercharge rounds.
In the following heat Haydn MacNicol (Scotborough) led his heat from start to finish with an impressive display of quality surfing to advance to the next round. Both Tarryn Chudleigh (Scarborough) and Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) came second in their round two qualifying heats, earning themselves places in qualifying round three.
The last heat of the day saw East London surfers Nikita Robb and Alice McGregor competing together. McGregor got off to a good start but in the last five minutes lost momentum while Robb sneaked into second place and McGregor ended third. Robb advanced to qualifying round three while McGregor gets her second chance in today's repercharge rounds.
Jaco Steyn (Melkbosstrand) was the only casualty of the day, placing third in his round two repercharge heat which saw him eliminated from the event.
Day four will see qualifying round three for all divisions, Under 16 boys repercharge round three, Under 18 boys repercharge round two and under 18 girls repercharge two.
