Halfway into the event and Team Australia are well alive

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 May, 2006 : - - The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships hit the halfway mark today at Maresias Beach Brazil. The swell has increased slightly (3-4 foot) but conditions still remain difficult.

Team Australia continues to show their strong presence both in the water and on the beach. The ozzies are only one of two countries (Hawaii being the other) to have all 12 team surfers still in the event.

The start of the day seen the U/16 boys round three heats commence, Owen Wright (Culburra) and fellow team mate Chris friend (Sunshine Coast) took to the water in what proved to be one the most entertaining heats of the event.

Wright was in sizzling form during his round three clash, posting two seven plus rides, an 8.17 and an amazing 9 point tube ride, giving him the highest combined heat score of the event (17.17). ‘I felt pretty good out there. I had a couple of waves come my way, it was a little lumpy and bumby making it hard to be in the right spot, said Owen.

Chris Friend placed third in the heat eliminated by French surfer Pierre Laborder by 0.47 of a point. Chris will now move into the repo charge round. Davey Cathels( Narrabeen) controlled his heat until the dying seconds in which the Brazilian and South African surfers managed to find high scoring wave to eliminate Cathels to the repo charge round.

In the U/18 blue ribbon division, Australian Surfers Julian Wilson (Coolum) and Caleb Reid – Bouquist (Bronte) both won their heats to progress into round four tomorrow. Julian gave a polished and calculated display of surfing posting 15.50 and Caleb defeated South African number one seed Jordy Smith in a nail biting exchange of surfing.

Nick Vasicek was also eliminated into the repo charge round despite an 8.10 left hand tube ride loosing by 0.3 to Hawaiian surfer Torrey Mister. Matt Wilkinson easily won his repo charge heat to continue in the event.

The U/18 girls also surfed today with Jessica Hickson (Boomerang Beach) and Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa) winning through to round four. ‘The waves seemed a little more to my liking, Jess said. ‘I am stoked with my highest scoring wave so far ‘.

Kira Townsend and Angela both placed third in their heat and they will now surf in the repo charge heats tomorrow. To watch the event live go to www.surfingaustralia.com and follow the Team Australia links.

Team Australia would like to recognize the Australian Sports Commission for their ongoing support of the program along with support of the team from Casuarina Domain Resort Rec Club, Rhythm, Salomon, Gorilla Grip, FCS, Endura, and BC Hats.

The annual ISA World Junior Championships is hosted by the International Surfing Association (ISA) with support from Quiksilver.
