South African Team remains in contention for top honours in the overall team event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 May, 2006 : - - The French girls dominated qualifying round three today, with three out of four girls advancing to qualifying round four in difficult four foot waves Lee Ann Curren, daughter of former three time world champion Tom Curren, was the standout of the day winning her heat showing style far beyond her years.

The Under 16 boys that performed well today were Australian top seed Owen Wright, Nicholas Von Rupp (Germany) and Charles Martin (France), all winning their respective qualifying round three heats.

Matthew Bromley ( Kommetjie), who placed second in his heat, said "I'm stoked to still be in the qualifying and I'm feeling more relaxed and confident for my next heat". Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) also advanced in second place at the expense of teammate Haydn McNicol (Scotborough) who placed third. "I'm happy that I made my heat and I feel good for tomorrow", Joubert remarked.

McNicol will get his second chance in the repercharge tomorrow while Joubert will contest qualifying round 4. In the Under 18 boys qualifying round three Kyle Lane (Umhlanga) put in a great performance to earn second in his heat. "The contest has been going really well and I'm amped for my heat tomorrow", said Lane.

Jordy Smith (Durban) placed second behind Australian Caleb R-Boquist with Rudy Palmboom (Bluff) third. "I hope the waves will be better tomorrow but I'm stoked with my performance", Smith commented. Palmboom will surf in repercharge round four while Smith advances to qualifying round four.

Chantelle Rautenbach, Tarryn Chudleigh and Nikita Robb all struggled in the difficult conditions. Rautenbach and Chudleigh ended their respective heats in fourth while Robb placed third. The three girls will have a day off before their repercharge round four heats.

Klee Strachan advanced through his repercharge round three heat in second place to keep his chances alive. Day five will see qualifying rounds four and five in all divisions, Under 18 boys repercharge three and four, Under 16 boys repercharge round four and Under 18 girls repercharge round three. South African Team Coach Howie Gold noted, "Thursday is going to be a big day for us, but I'm cautiously optimistic that our surfers will rise to the challenge".

The South African Team remains in contention for top honours in the overall team event. The ISA Tag Team event starts on Saturday, South Africa finished second to France in 2005 but are hoping to take the gold this year.
