Albany Surf and Skate Wavefest

Wavefest delivers

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 May, 2006 : - - More than 60 competitors took part in the eighth Albany Surf and Skate Wavefest last weekend.Saturday's southerly winds made Albany's surf locations unsuitable for competition, so contest organisers decided to run a shortened program at Denmark's Ocean Beach. The waves were average, but very contestable.

Conditions were improved on Sunday, when the predicted light northerly wind delivered good offshore conditions at Mutton Bird Beach. Clear skies and sunshine also added to the good vibe of the day's proceedings. The solid swell produced some sizeable and sometimes heavy waves throughout Sunday's events.

The quality of the surfing and bodyboarding was exceptional with spectators given an excellent display of power surfing, on-edge manoeuvres and polished tube riding. Due to the heavy conditions and safety concerns, the under 12s and girls under 16s surfing heats were moved to the car park corner of the beach.

The younger surfers and bodyboarders showed much courage by competing in the testing conditions. Paul Dupuy's performance is worthy of note as he won the men's open surfing final, and for the second year in a row, the men's over 35 final. Ben Rufus was also a standout performer taking second place in the men's open surfing.

Callan Beltrama won the under 16 Saul Fraser Memorial Award, with previous winners of this award continuing to compete in the open men's competition.
